Round 2 of the 358 Modifieds Presented by Unifirst @ Airborne Speedway May 27th 2023

Zack Daniels (30) gets the bottom of the track for the winning pass on Nathaniel Guay (97.5) in the Renegades Main. It would be the third night of racing from Airborne Speedway for 2023 with 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modified, Renegades, Limited Sportsman Modified, and the Street Stock all in action on the night. Once the heat races would be done on the night it would be onto the features for the evening with the Limited Sportsman Modified first and it would see Nate Leonard make quick of the field to get his first career win. Then it would be onto the 358 Modifieds feature and it would see a great battle up front between Mike Mahaney and Felix Roy with the eventual win going to Felix Roy on a pass with a couple of laps left and Chris Raabe would round out the top three. Then it would be onto the SportsmanModified feature and it would be a race that would take some time to get going as there would be four cautions in the first laps of the race but once it did get going Mike Phinney would get around Beau Reeves for the lead and would not give it up the rest of the night for the win and Reeves and Aubin would round out the top three with the Hard Charger Bucko Braham getting fourth after a 19th place start. Then we would be onto the Renegades for their 25-lap event and Nathaniel Guay would get the early lead at the start of the race. Although he would start falling backward and Zack Daniels would get the lead and hang on for the win over a hard-charging Shawn Duquette and last week's winner Bill Thwaits for the top three. Then the last race of the evening would be the Taylor Rentals Street Stocks for fifteen laps and it would see Josh Blake getting the win but that would not be without challenge from Josh Laporte Jr and Ryan Senecal and that would be Blake's first win. The Airborne Speedway will be back in action next weekend June 3rd with the Sportsman Modified, Renegades, Limited Sportsman Modified, and the Street Stock in action plus the Mohawk Valley Antique racers. Frenchie Chevy Memorial Cup Mohawk International Raceway May 26th 2023

It would be a tight battle at the front of the pack in the Pro Stock division as the top five would have the freight train going with Sid Harmer (690) getting the win over Joel Herne (AK47). It would be the third week of racing from the Mohawk International Raceway and it would be the annual memorial cup presented by Frenchie's Chevy with the 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modified, Pro Stock, Limited Sportsman Modified, and the 4 Cylinders with 95 cars in the pits. After the heat race was done on the night the first main of the evening would be the 4 Cylinders and there would be a battle up front for a few laps between Francis White and Curtis Smith although Francis White would slowly pull away for the win. Then next up would be the Sportsman Modified 35-lap feature and it would see the first 31 laps go caution free. Then on the late race restart it would be a whos up front with Cedric Gauvreau, Shane Pecore, Nick Heywood, and DJ Gonyo having the first two rows on the restart. There would be a brief battle up front between Gonyo and Gaureau with Gauvreau getting the edge Shane Pecore would try and get the lead with two laps to go but Gauvreau would hold on for the win. Then it would be time for the 40 lap memorial cup race for the 358 Modifieds and it would be a three-horse race for the last 20 laps but o what a race it was between Tim Fuller Chris Raabe and Lance Willix as the three of them would be side by side switching from the top to the bottom of the track and flopping the lead back and forth throughout with the eventual win going to Chris Raabe and in doing so resetting the Mohawk International record with his fifth cup win. Then it would be the Pro Stocks for 20 laps and this would have another great battle up front with the top 5 cars all battling it out but Sid Harmer Jr would be just that much better than the rest as he would get the win over Joel Herne and Marc Lalonde. Then to finish off the night would be the Limited Sportsman Modified and it would see the kid Dylan Moore getting his first win in a sportsman over Kevin Foster and Dustin Wood to finish out the top three, Racing will return to the Mohawk Speedway next weekend with all the divisions returning for regur racing plus the slick track enduro. Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Class B Baseball Semi-finals: #3 Saranac Lake Red Strom @ #2 Plattsburgh Hornets May 22nd 2023

Plattsburgh's Trenton Griffiths (6) took care of his own as he would tag the Red Strom base runner on the dribbler down the first base line. It would be the semi-finals of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Class B playoffs and the Plattsburgh Hornets would host the #3 Saranac Lake Red Storm at the Plattsburgh Athletic Complex. The road Red Storm would have upset on their mind early as they would get out to the early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-rbi single by Strack. In the bottom of the second inning, the Hornets would get on the board with a fielder's choice by Jake Calkins to make it a 2-1 game. Then in the bottom of the third, the Hornets would tie the game at two on a rbi single from Jace Lacey. The game would stay there all the way till the fifth inning when the Hornets would explode for a seven-run inning led by a bases-clearing triple by Trenton Griffiths to at the time give the Hornets an 8-2 lead as the Hornets would get one more run later in the inning to have a 9-2 lead after five. The Red Strom would keep fighting though as they would get a run in the sixth on a sac fly by Strack to make it a 9-3 game. Then in the seventh the Red Strom would keep coming as they would get two more on back-to-back rbi singles from Darrah and Rivers but their comeback bid would come up short as the Hornets would get the 9-5 win. In the winning effort, Trenton Griffiths would go six innings and give up just three runs on six hits while striking out at seven as the Hornets will advance to the Section VII Class B Finals against the Beekmantown Eagles who upset the #1 Peru Nighthawks at Chip Cummings Field on May 25th. Law Enforcement Night Presented by Casella Waste Management @ Airborne Speedway May 13th 2023

Jake Fountain (22) and Rich Doner (95) battle for the early race lead in the Taylor Rental Street Stocks that would see Fountain prevail for the win. It would be the second racing weekend of the season from the Airborne Speedway and it would see the four main divisions of the season in racing action with the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified, Hartson Total Opening Renegades, Taylor Rental Street Stocks, and the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified on Law Enforcement Night. There would be a slight delay at the start of the action as the dust and sun setting was making it very difficult for the drivers to see down the backstretch so they would do some more track prep before the start of the racing action. Once the racing would get underway there would be great battles throughout the divisions and minimal numbers of cautions on the evening. All racing was done around 9:30. Once the heat races were over it would be on to and the first feature out of the box would be the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified. It would see Mike Arnold get his second straight win to start the season as he would get the wire-to-wire victory over Rick Frenyea and Parker Derdomey. Then next up would be the Taylor Rental Street Stock for there 15 lap event and it would be another race that would caution free but it would be not without great racing competition as it would see Jake Fountain and Rich Doner battle for the early race lead which Fountain would get and hold on for his first win of the season and then there would be a great battle down the stretch with Doner and Josh Laporte Jr for second which would see Doner hold on for second place with Laporte getting third. Then it would be on to the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified and that would see Michael Wright start on the pole and just take off on the field but there would be a hard-charging Joey Scarbrough that would come from his ninth starting spot and with two laps to go be on the back bumper of Michael Wright and would use the lap car as a pick for the winning pass to get the win Michael Wright would get second and Craig Worley would finish out the podium. Then it would be the last race of the night with the Hartson Total Opening Renegades in there 25 lap main event and would see Billy Thwaits have a great battle with the Terry Brothers in the closing laps for the win on a late-race restart to get his first win of the season to send the crowd home happy and wanted more next. Speaking of next week the track will come back to life with racing action with the four weekly divisions back in action. Gallery

Matt LaValley (29c), Josh LaPorte Jr (4) and Ryan Senecal (94) all battling for the lead in the 15 lap Taylor Rental Street Stock feature. It would be the opening night of the 2023 season and the kick-off to the 69th season at the Airborne Speedway presented by the A Verdi Storage Containers and there would be five divisions in action on the evening with the Be Cool Heating and Air Conditioning 358 Modifieds, J+S Steel Sportsman Modified, Harson Total Opening Renegades, Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified and the Taylor Rental Street Stocks and there would be a total of 111 cars in the pits. Once all the heat races were over it would be onto the main events of the night and the first out of the box would be the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified it would see Jamy Begor get off to the quick start and take the early lead but there would be a restart midway through the race and it would see Chris Cayea use the high side to advantage and pull away for the win while Gabriel Cyr would beat Begor on the last lap to round out the top three on the night. Then next up would be the return of the 358 Modifieds to the Airborne Speedway with their 30-lap feature which would see Lance Willix get the win in dominating fashion as he would lead all thirty laps for the win. Although he would not be without competition as he would be alongside Chris Raabe for the restart and Raabe would be for a few laps and then Willix would just pull away for the win. There would be a nice battle for second in the closing laps as Chris Raabe and David Herbet would jostle for the position back in fourth but in the end, it would be Raabe second and Hebert third. Then it would be onto the Hartson Total Opening Renegades for there 25 lap feature event and would see a battle between Josh Terry and a guy making his return to the track after a hard mid-season wreck last year keep out the rest of the season and Duquette would get the win using his patterned bottom lane and hugging the grass for the win and Jason Boggett would finish third to round out the top three. Then we would be onto the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified and it would see a first-timer getting the win as Mike Arnold would get the win in the fifteen-lap caution-free event. Then to finish off the night it would be the Taylor Rental Street Stocks in their fifteen-lap event with nearly 30 cars on the track. It would take the race a few tries to get going as there would be several cautions in the first few laps of the race but once the dust settled Mat LaValley would come away with the win after a hard battle with Josh LaPorte and Ryan Senecal would round out the top three. The Airborne Speedway will come back to life next Saturday night May 13th with the Sportsman Modified, Limited Sportsman Modified, Renegades, and the Street Stocks on Law Enforcement night.Gallery

SUNYAC Baseball: Fredonia State Blue Devils @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals May 5th 2023

Plattsburgh State's Andrew Veit (2) with the fire across from the whole to beat the runner at first for the out. It would be the start of the final series of the season for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals and they would host the Fredonia State Blue Devils in SUNYAC Baseball action. The game would start off well for the home Cardinals as they would get the 3-0 lead in the third inning of the game led by Kornblau's rbi double. The game would stay there til the sixth inning when the Fredonia State Blue Devils would get on the board with a rbi single by Wentland. In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals would regain their three-run lead at 4-1 on the rbi single by Gonzalski. Then in the 8th inning, the Blue Devils would get it back to a two-run game at 4-2 on the Roach rbi single. However, the Cardinals would answer right back on a rbi double by Defayette to make it a 5-2 game and give the Cardinals the win. In the winning effort, Sean Malamud would win as he would go the complete game and scatter five hits giving up two runs and striking out four as the Cardinals went to 13-20 on the season. Gallery

Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Baseball: Northern Adirondack Bobcats @ Plattsburgh Hornets May 5th 2023

Northern Adirondack's Bruce (7) with the fire across the diamond to complete the out at first. It would be a matchup inside section VII Baseball as the Plattsburgh Hornets would host the Northern Adirondack Bobcats in league action. The Hornets would score four runs in the second inning with the key point of the inning being a rbi single by Braeden Calkins to give the Hornets the 4-0 lead. However, Bobcats would answer right back with a single run in the top of the third inning to make it a 4-1 game. Although the Hornets would keep the bats hot and score another 4 runs in the bottom of the third led by a 3-rbi triple by Trenton Griffiths to give the Hornets the 8-1 lead. The Hornets would stay hot in the fourth inning the Hornets would score another 4 runs lead by a pair of rbi hits by Nate Baker and Braeden Calkins and take a 12-1 lead. Then in the fifth inning, the Hornets would continue the hitting as they would get another couple of runs on a 2 rbi double by Marcus Griffith and extend the lead to 14-1. In the sixth inning, the Bobcats would get a single run by Boulrice on a passed ball to make it a 14-2 game. Although the Hornets would keep their red-hot going and get another five runs in the sixth inning led by a pair of rbi singles by Nate Baker and Jake Ferris as the Hornets would secure the 19-2 win. In the winning effort for the Hornets, Dan Hartman would go five innings and give up just three hits and one run and struck out nine as the Hornets go to 8-3 as the Bobcats would fall to 1-6 on the season. SUNYAC Baseball: Cortland State Red Dragons @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals April 28th 2023

Plattsburgh State's Alex Kornblau (8) with the running catch as he goes back to the outfield for the out. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Cortland State Red Dragons in SUNYAC baseball action as part of a doubleheader from Chip Cummings Field. The first game would not go so well for the home Cardinals as the game would be called after seven innings due to the run rule the Red Dragons would get the 15-2 win. Then in the second game of the doubleheader, the game would not look good for the home Cardinals as Mieczkowski would start the game with a two-run homer and give the Red Dragons the 2-0 lead. Although in the bottom of the first, the Cardinals would answer back with a rbi triple by Nick Cergol to make it a 2-1 game. Then in the second inning, the Cardinals would tie the game at two on the Adam Wein rbi single. The game would remain there till the fifth inning when Red Dragons Chemotti would hit the rbi single to take the 3-2 lead. In the seven-inning, the Red Dragons would extend their lead to 5-2 on the Krafft rbi single. Then in the ninth inning, Krafft would hit a sacrifice fly to get the 6-2 Red Dragons lead and secure the victory. The Cardinals would fall to 12-20 on the season as Andrew Veit get saddled with the loss as he gave up ten hits and six runs over eight innings. The Cardinals will be back in action this Tuesday, May 2nd with a nonconference game against the Middlebury Panthers. Gallery

It would start off as a good game as the Hornets would get a single run in the second and third inning and have a 2-0 lead. Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Baseball: Saranac Chiefs @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 25th 2023

Plattsburgh's Warren Miller (18) gets around on the inside pitch and sends it for a base hit. The Plattsburgh Hornets would meet up with the Saranac Chiefs in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action. The game would start off well for the home Hornets as Brady Calkins would have a 2 rbi double for an early 2-0 lead. Then in the second inning, the Hornets would double up their lead on another 2 rbi base hit from Brady Calkins to extend their lead to 4-0. In the third inning, the Hornets would add another two runs on hits from Dominick Deangelo and Trenton Griffiths to extend the lead to 6-0 and then the rains would come and put a halt to the game. The teams would pick up the game a couple of days later in the fourth inning and in that inning the Hornets would add another four runs and take the 10-0 lead by a 2 rbi single by Jake Calkins. In the fifth inning, the Hornet's bats would stay hot and get a pair of runs to secure the 12-0 victory. In the win, Hornets Dan Hartman and Warren Miller would combine for the complete game shutout as they would go to 5-3 on the season while the Chiefs fall to 3-2 on the season. Gallery
