Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Softball Class B Semi-Finals: #4 Peru Nighthawks @ #1 Plattsburgh Hornets May 23rd 2023

Peru's Luaren Prescott (5) with the tag on Plattsburgh's Hornets would-be base stealer. It would be the semi-finals of the Class B Champlain Valley Athletic Conference playoffs and the #1 Plattsburgh Hornets would host rival #4 Peru Nighthawks at the Plattsburgh Athletic Complex. With the winner meeting the winner of the other semi-final the Saranac Chiefs and the Saranac Lake Red Storm at Plattsburgh State Cardinal Park on Thursday. The game would remain scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Nighthawks would erupt for a 3-0 lead by Gabby Cunningham's 2 rbi double. In the fifth inning, the Nighthawks would get a tac-on round on the sacrifice fly by Steph Gappner for the 4-0 lead. Although the Hornets would not go quietly as they would try to hold the home field they would answer back in the sixth inning with a pair of runs lead by rbi hits by Duquette and Miller to make it a 4-2 game. The Hornets would try and tie the game up in the seventh but it would fall short and the Peru Nighthawks would get the upset win to advance to Section VII Class B Finals against the Saranac Chiefs. In the winning effort, Zoey Malcolm would go the complete game giving up 2 runs on three hits while striking out eight to get the win. Gallery

#3 Saranac Lake Red Storm @ #2 Plattsburgh Hornets May 22nd 2023
Plattsburgh's Nate Baker with the tag at second base for the out on the would-be Red Strom base stealer. It would be the semi-finals of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Class B playoffs and the Plattsburgh Hornets would host the #3 Saranac Lake Red Storm at the Plattsburgh Athletic Complex. The road Red Storm would have upset on their mind early as they would get out to the early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-rbi single by Strack. In the bottom of the second inning, the Hornets would get on the board with a fielder's choice by Jake Calkins to make it a 2-1 game. Then in the bottom of the third, the Hornets would tie the game at two on a rbi single from Jace Lacey. The game would stay there all the way till the fifth inning when the Hornets would explode for a seven-run inning led by a bases-clearing triple by Trenton Griffiths to at the time give the Hornets an 8-2 lead as the Hornets would get one more run later in the inning to have a 9-2 lead after five. The Red Strom would keep fighting though as they would get a run in the sixth on a sac fly by Strack to make it a 9-3 game. Then in the seventh the Red Strom would keep coming as they would get two more on back-to-back rbi singles from Darrah and Rivers but their comeback bid would come up short as the Hornets would get the 9-5 win. In the winning effort, Trenton Griffiths would go six innings and give up just three runs on six hits while striking out at seven as the Hornets will advance to the Section VII Class B Finals against the Beekmantown Eagles who upset the #1 Peru Nighthawks at Chip Cummings Field on May 25th. Plattsburgh's Trenton Griffiths (6) took care of his own as he would tag the Red Strom base runner on the dribbler down the first base line. It would be the semi-finals of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Class B playoffs and the Plattsburgh Hornets would host the #3 Saranac Lake Red Storm at the Plattsburgh Athletic Complex. Law Enforcement Night Presented by Casella Waste Management May 13th 2023
Joey Scarbrough (11vt) celebrates his first win of the season in victory lane after a pass on Michael Wright with two laps to go for the win. It would be the second racing weekend of the season from the Airborne Speedway and it would see the four main divisions of the season in racing action with the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified, Hartson Total Opening Renegades, Taylor Rental Street Stocks, and the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified on Law Enforcement Night. There would be a slight delay at the start of the action as the dust and sun setting was making it very difficult for the drivers to see down the backstretch so they would do some more track prep before the start of the racing action. Once the racing would get underway there would be great battles throughout the divisions and minimal numbers of cautions on the evening. All racing was done around 9:30. Once the heat races were over it would be on to and the first feature out of the box would be the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified. It would see Mike Arnold get his second straight win to start the season as he would get the wire-to-wire victory over Rick Frenyea and Parker Derdomey. Then next up would be the Taylor Rental Street Stock for there 15 lap event and it would be another race that would caution free but it would be not without great racing competition as it would see Jake Fountain and Rich Doner battle for the early race lead which Fountain would get and hold on for his first win of the season and then there would be a great battle down the stretch with Doner and Josh Laporte Jr for second which would see Doner hold on for second place with Laporte getting third. Then it would be on to the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified and that would see Michael Wright start on the pole and just take off on the field but there would be a hard-charging Joey Scarbrough that would come from his ninth starting spot and with two laps to go be on the back bumper of Michael Wright and would use the lap car as a pick for the winning pass to get the win Michael Wright would get second and Craig Worley would finish out the podium. Then it would be the last race of the night with the Hartson Total Opening Renegades in there 25 lap main event and would see Billy Thwaits have a great battle with the Terry Brothers in the closing laps for the win on a late-race restart to get his first win of the season to send the crowd home happy and wanted more next. Speaking of next week the track will come back to life with racing action with the four weekly divisions back in action. Gallery

69th Season Openner Presented by A-Verdi Storage Containers @ Airborne SpeedwayMay 6th 2023
Chris Cayea (18) scores the opening night victory in the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified over Gabriel Cyr and Jamy Begor. It would be the opening night of the 2023 season and the kick-off to the 69th season at the Airborne Speedway presented by the A Verdi Storage Containers and there would be five divisions in action on the evening with the Be Cool Heating and Air Conditioning 358 Modifieds, J+S Steel Sportsman Modified, Harson Total Opening Renegades, Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified and the Taylor Rental Street Stocks and there would be a total of 111 cars in the pits. Once all the heat races were over it would be onto the main events of the night and the first out of the box would be the J+S Steel Sportsman Modified it would see Jamy Begor get off to the quick start and take the early lead but there would be a restart midway through the race and it would see Chris Cayea use the high side to advantage and pull away for the win while Gabriel Cyr would beat Begor on the last lap to round out the top three on the night. Then next up would be the return of the 358 Modifieds to the Airborne Speedway with their 30-lap feature which would see Lance Willix get the win in dominating fashion as he would lead all thirty laps for the win. Although he would not be without competition as he would be alongside Chris Raabe for the restart and Raabe would be for a few laps and then Willix would just pull away for the win. There would be a nice battle for second in the closing laps as Chris Raabe and David Herbet would jostle for the position back in fourth but in the end, it would be Raabe second and Hebert third. Then it would be onto the Hartson Total Opening Renegades for there 25 lap feature event and would see a battle between Josh Terry and a guy making his return to the track after a hard mid-season wreck last year keep out the rest of the season and Duquette would get the win using his patterned bottom lane and hugging the grass for the win and Jason Boggett would finish third to round out the top three. Then we would be onto the Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman Modified and it would see a first-timer getting the win as Mike Arnold would get the win in the fifteen-lap caution-free event. Then to finish off the night it would be the Taylor Rental Street Stocks in their fifteen-lap event with nearly 30 cars on the track. It would take the race a few tries to get going as there would be several cautions in the first few laps of the race but once the dust settled Mat LaValley would come away with the win after a hard battle with Josh LaPorte and Ryan Senecal would round out the top three. The Airborne Speedway will come back to life next Saturday night May 13th with the Sportsman Modified, Limited Sportsman Modified, Renegades, and the Street Stocks on Law Enforcement night.Gallery

Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Baseball: Northern Adirondack Bobcats @ Plattsburgh Hornets May 5th 2023

Northern Adirondack's Bruce (7) with the fire across the diamond to complete the out at first. It would be a matchup inside section VII Baseball as the Plattsburgh Hornets would host the Northern Adirondack Bobcats in league action. The Hornets would score four runs in the second inning with the key point of the inning being a rbi single by Braeden Calkins to give the Hornets the 4-0 lead. However, Bobcats would answer right back with a single run in the top of the third inning to make it a 4-1 game. Although the Hornets would keep the bats hot and score another 4 runs in the bottom of the third led by a 3-rbi triple by Trenton Griffiths to give the Hornets the 8-1 lead. The Hornets would stay hot in the fourth inning the Hornets would score another 4 runs lead by a pair of rbi hits by Nate Baker and Braeden Calkins and take a 12-1 lead. Then in the fifth inning, the Hornets would continue the hitting as they would get another couple of runs on a 2 rbi double by Marcus Griffith and extend the lead to 14-1. In the sixth inning, the Bobcats would get a single run by Boulrice on a passed ball to make it a 14-2 game. Although the Hornets would keep their red-hot going and get another five runs in the sixth inning led by a pair of rbi singles by Nate Baker and Jake Ferris as the Hornets would secure the 19-2 win. In the winning effort for the Hornets, Dan Hartman would go five innings and give up just three hits and one run and struck out nine as the Hornets go to 8-3 as the Bobcats would fall to 1-6 on the season.
