Adirondack Winter Invitational Championship: #13 Arizona State Sun Devils Vs #17 Cornell Big Red December 30th 2023

It would be the championship of the first ever Adirondack Winter Invitational and it would pit a pair of top 20 teams in the country to battle it out at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY with 3,800 in attendance the #13 Arizona State Sun Devils would face off against the #17 Cornell Big Red. It would take till there were five minutes left in the opening period before we had our first goal from Cornell's Gabriel Seger on the powerplay for the 1-0 Big Red lead. Then in the second period, just 4:55 into the period the Big Red would take the 2-0 lead on the George Fegaras would score for the Big Red and give them a 2-0 lead. However, the Sun Devils would answer right back 17 seconds later to keep it a one-goal game at 2-1 on the Jackson Nieermayer goal. The game would stay there till the 43-second mark of the third period when the Sun Devils would tie the game up on the powerplay with the goal from Matthew Kopperud. That would be all on this night though as the goalies would stand tall between the pipes for the rest of the way there would be scoring in the rest of the third period and the five-minute overtime so the game goes in the books as a tie. However, because of the Adirondack Winter Invitational, the teams would go to the shootout and there the Arizona State Sun Devils would win the first-ever tournament 1-0 in the shootout. Arizona State's Tj Semptimphelter would make 25 saves while Cornell's Ian Shane would 18 in this evenly matched game now will just wait and see if the Arizona State Sun Devils will get the invite back to see if they can defend their title. Adirondack Winter Invitational Semi-Finals: #11 Massachusetts Minutemen Vs #17 Cornell Big Red December 29th 2023

Massachusetts's Cole O'Hara (19) gets down low to the ice uses his body to get by Cornell's Nick Desantis (28). It would be the opening game of the first-ever Adirondack Winter Invitational from the famed Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY and it would feature a couple of powerhouses as the #11 Massachusetts Minutemen would face off with the #17 Cornell Big Red. The game would be very physical through the first period and the rest of the game as there would be no scoring in the first but both teams would have their chances to get the opening goal and the Minutemen had an early goal waved off on the coach's challenge. In the second period, the Big Red would get the opening goal just 2:52 on Hoyt Stanley's first NCAA goal. However, the Minutemen would come charging back and tie the game up at one just four minutes later at the 6:08 mark of the period from Michael Cameron. The Big Red would regain the lead with just over five minutes left in the period on the Dalton Bancroft powerplay goal. The game would stay there through most of the third period until the Minutemen would pull the goalie for the extra stake and tie the game up on the scramble play from Ryan Lautenbach. From there the game would head to the five-minute 3x3 overtime and there would be no scoring so the game would officially end in a tie. Because this was a tournament weekend the shootout would be needed to decide the games tomorrow and the Cornell Big Red would win 2-0. In the winning effort for the Big Red, Ian Shane would make 23 saves as the Cornell Big Red head to the finals tomorrow where they will get the winner of #13 Arizona State Sun Devils and the Clarkson Golden Knights. It would be the second semi-final game of the Adirondack Winter Invitational and it would see the #13 Arizona State Sun Devils taking on the Clarkson Golden Knights in front of 4100 fans at the famed Herb Brooks Arena. The game would start well for the Golden Knights would get the opening goal of the game and the lone goal of the first period from Jesse Tucker at the 8:24 mark of the period for the 1-0 Knights lead. The game would stay there till the 5:27 mark of the second period when Ellis Rickwood would stretch the lead to 2-0 Knights. The Sun Devils would finally get on the board at the 9:14 mark of the period on the Jackson Niedermayer goal to cut the lead to 2-1. Then just 46 seconds into the third period the Sun Devils would tie the game at two on the short-handed goal by Charle Schoen. Then with just over minutes left in the game the Sun Devils would come back and take the lead on the Kyle Smolen goal. Then to put the icing on the cake the Sun Devils would add a pair of empty net goals from Tyler Gratton and Kyle Smolen and secure the 5-2 win. In the winning effort, Tj Semptimpheter would make 20 saves as they advance to the championship game tomorrow against the #17 Cornell Big Red. As for the Golden Knights will head to the consolation game behind Austin Roden's 21-save night and take on #11 Massachusetts in the Consolation game. Gallery

Adirondack Winter Invitational Consolation: #11 Massachusetts Minutemen Vs Clarkson Golden Knights December 30th 2023

Clarkson's Austin Roden (33) with the blocker save as part of a 19-save night and kept his team in the game. It would be the third-place game of the first-ever Adirondack Winter Invitational and it would feature the #11 Massachusetts Minutemen and the Clarkson Golden Knights at the famed Herb Brooks Arena with a crowd of 3600 in attendance. The Minutemen would strike first just 4:48 into the game on the goal from Michael Cameron to get them off to the quick 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights would keep swinging through the rest of the period and would tie the game with 1:44 left in the period on the Ryan Taylor goal. However, the Minutemen would start the second period strong again and take the lead again 4:33 into the period on the Kenny Connors goal to make it 2-1. Then just about four minutes later at the 8:49 mark of the period the Minutemen would expand their lead to 3-1 on the Cole O'Hara goal. Once again the Golden Knights would come back swinging and make it a one-goal game at 3-2 on the Mathieu Gosselin goal with 6:09 left in the period. Then with 1:26 left in the period, the Golden Knights would tie the game at three on the Ayrton Martino goal. Then when the teams returned for the third period the Golden Knights took the 4-3 lead just 42 seconds into the period on an Anthony Romano short-handed goal. The Minutemen would not go away without a fight and they would tie the game at 4 on the Linden Alger goal with 11:30 left in the game. Although neither team would be able to get the edge before the end of the period and the teams went to overtime. Then with 2:39 left in the extra frame Ryan Taylor would light the lamp to send the Golden Knight faithful home happy with a 5-4 upset win over #11 Massachusetts Minutemen. SUNYAC Men's Hockey: #2 Plattsburgh State Cardinals @ Buffalo State Bengals December 8th 2023

Plattsburgh State's Trey Thomas (14) backs his way into the Buffalo State skater for the hit that sends him to the ice. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would make the trek across the state to take on the Bengals of Buffalo State in SUNYAC Men's Hockey. The game would not start well for the Cardinals as Connor Bizal would light the lamp for the Bengals just 1:54 into the game to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Bengals wouldn't waste time and expanding on their lead as it would go to 2-0 at the 6:22 mark of the period on the Tyler Penree goal. That is where the game would stay till the 4:58 mark of the second period when the Cardinals would get on the board on the Bennett Stockdale goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Bengals wouldn't waste time in regaining their two-goal lead on the Joe Glamos power-play goal to make it 3-1. However, the Cardinals would answer right back forty seconds later on the Thomas Maia goal and make it a one-goal game again at 3-2. Then just four minutes later the Cardinals would come back and tie the game at three on the Trey Thomas goal. The game would stay there till the 5:11 mark of the third period when the Bengals would take the lead again on the Vadim Kiriakov goal at 4-3. Once again the Cardinals would answer back in thirty seconds as Aaron Catron would score and tie the game at four. Then with just over two minutes left in the game, the Bengals would take the lead for the third and final time at 5-4 on the Parker Allison powerplay goal. They would add an empty netter to secure the 6-4 win. In the win Marcus Cumberworth would make 41 saves as they went to 5-8 while Elli Shiller would make 18 saves as the Cardinals fell to 9-2 on the season, Th Plattsburgh State Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow as they head to Fredonia and look to end their two-game losing streak, Gallery

SUNYAC Men's Hockey: Oswego State Lakers @ #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals December 2nd 2023

It would be the second game of the weekend for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals and they would host long-time SUNYAC rival the Oswego State Lakers at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena as they look to start 10-0 in front of 2160 fans. Although the game would not start the right way for the home Cardinals the Lakers would get the opening goal of the game with 7:41 left in the opening period on the Shane Bull powerplay goal. The game would stay there til the early stages of the second period when the Lakers would extend the lead to 2-0 just 1:16 on the Brock Krulicki. The Cardinals would keep fighting and get the game back within one just three minutes later on the Lonan Bulger powerplay goal to make it a 2-1 game. The Lakers would retake the two-goal lead at the 12:31 mark of the second period on the Daniel Colabufo goal to make it 3-1. Once again the Cardinals would get it to a one-goal game at 3-2 with under 90 seconds left in the period on the Bennett Stockdale goal. However, it would be short-lived as the Lakers would score just 18 seconds later on the Tyler Flack goal to make it a 4-2 Lakers to end the second period. The Cardinals would come back hot in the third period and make it a one-goal game for the third time just 3:10 into the period on Bennett Stockdale's second goal of the game. However, it would not be enough for the Cardinals as the Lakers added an empty netter late and the Cardinals lost 5-3. Plattsburgh State's Tio D'Addario (9) gets the rebound goal to get the Cardinals scoring started. It would be the annual teddy bear toss night at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena as the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Cortland State Red Dragons as they would look to continue their undefeated season in front of just over 1500 fans. It would take the 7:12 mark of the first period before Tio D'Addario would score for the Cardinals and then the Bears would go flying. Then with just over a minute left in the period the Cardinals would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Thomas Maia goal. The game would stay there till the 11:07 mark of the second period Aaron Catron for the lone goal of the second period. It would take long into the third period for a goal as the Cardinals would score just 25 seconds in on the Josh Belgrave goal to make it a 4-0 game. With just about 5:30 left in the game, the Red Dragons would end the shutout bid with the Domenic Settino goal to make it 4-1. Although just over 40 seconds later the Cardinals would get the 4-goal lead back on Luk Jirousek and just over two minutes later Jirousek would score again to secure the 6-1 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals would stay perfect on the season at 9-0 as Eli Shiller would make 18 saves on the night. Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout Consolation: St. Olaf Oles Vs Middlebury Panthers November 25th 2023

Middlebury's Thomas LaLonde (29) with the save on the Oles shot in close on the net. It would be the start of the second day of the Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout and it would start with the Consolation Game with the Middlebury Panthers and the St. Olaf Oles in front of 350 fans. It would take till the final 30 seconds of the third period before we had our first goal and it would give the Panthers the 1-0 lead thanks to Andrew Seaman. The Oles wouldn't waste long and tied the game up at one on the Michael Webster goal just 56 seconds into the second period. The game would stay there all the way to the 1:57 mark of the third period when the Panthers would regain the lead on the Paddy Mangan goal at 2-1. The Oles wouldn't let the Panthers get away and they would keep fighting and tie the game at two with about 6:30 left in the game on Ben Luscko's goal. The game would stay there through the rest of regulation and the five-minute overtime and the game would end in a 2-2 tie. Middlebury's Thomas Lalonde would make 22 saves as the Panthers went to 0-2-2 while the Oles went to 4-4-2 as Jake Horoho made 35 saves. Gallery.

Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout Championship:#11 Norwich Cadets @ #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals November 25th 2023

Plattsburgh State's Tio D'Addario (9) stuffed the puck in the open side for the game-winning powerplay goal. It would be time for the championship of the Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout and it would be a rematch of last year's title game this time though at Plattsburgh State as the #11 Norwich Cadets would take on the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals in front of 1400 fans. It would take until the second period before we would get the opening goal of the game when Kevin Weaver Vitale would break the ice and get a goal at the 8:25 mark of the second period to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. The one-goal game would be short-lived as the Cardinals would expand the to 2-0 27 seconds later on the power play goal from Tio D'Addario. The Cadets would come back about six minutes later and make it a one-goal game again on the Pual Schmid goal. From there the Cardinal defense would do the rest as there would be no scoring the rest of the night to give the Cardinals the 2-1 victory and a second straight Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout championship as they would stay undefeated on the season at 8-0. It would be the return of the Great Northern Shootout this time brought to you by Layer Eight and the opening game of the tournament would see the battle of Vermont as the #11 Norwich Cadets would take on instate rival the Middlebury Panthers at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena. The game would start off well for the Cadets as they would get the early 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game on Holden Doggett's goal. Then inside the final two minutes of the period, the Cadets would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Brady Harroun goal. The Cadets would start to take control of the game as they would extend the lead to 3-0 on the powerplay goal six minutes into the second period on the Cooper Bertrand goal. The Panthers would answer right back 17 seconds later on the goal from Andrej Hromic to get the game back to a two-goal game at 3-1. The Cadets would retake the three-goal lead with just over two minutes left in the period on the Patrick O'Neal powerplay goal to make it a 4-1 game. In the third period, the Cadets would seal the game away on three unanswered goals from Clark Kerner, Joe Nagle, and Devon Thibodeau as they would secure the 7-1 win. In the winning effort, Sami Molu would make 17 saves as they go to 5-2-1 on the season and will take on the winner of the Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the St Olaf Oels in the championship of the Great Northern Shootout. It would take till just about four minutes left in the open period when the Cardinals got on the board on the powerplay goal on the deflection by Bennett Stockdale for the 1-0 lead. The game would stay there till there was just about five minutes in the second period when Bennett Stockdale would once again light the lamp to give the Cardinals the 2-0 lead. The Oles would keep fighting and the game would get very physical at times with many hard hits throughout. The Oles would make it a one-goal game at 2-1 with the extra attacker on the Tyler Cooper. Although the Cardinals would clamp down for the last 90 seconds and hold on for the 2-1 win. In the winning effort, Eli Shiller would make 19 saves as the Cardinals get the win to stay perfect on the season at 7-0 and will take on the #11 Norwich Cadets in the title game while the St. Olaf Oles will take on the Middlebury Panthers for third place. It would be the battle of the North Country as the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals (ranked number for the first time in 8 years) would host the Potsdam State Bears with just over 1500 fans in attendance in SUNYAC action. It would take till the midway mark of the first period when we would get the first goal of the game coming on the Bear's first shot on the Jack Loran goal to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. The game would stay there till there was just over a minute left in the period when the Cardinals would tie the game up on Bennett Stockdale's goal as they crashed the net. The Cardinals would have little time to take the lead in the game on Adam Tretowicz as he stuffs in the rebound 4:35 into the third to give the Cardinals the 2-1 lead. However, the Bears were not just going to roll over for the #1 team in the land as they would tie the game up at two on the Jack Loran second of the game. However, with just under 90 seconds left in the game, the Cardinals would take the 3-2 lead on the Paul Bryer goal for the 3-2 and eventual win. Jacob Hearne would make 17 saves in the winning effort as the Cardinals stayed undefeated on the season while the Bears fell to 1-5 in the early season. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals will be back in action as they host the Layer 8 North Country Shootout along with the Norwich, Middlebury, and St. Olaf. Gallery

The game would not start the greatest as the Golden Eagles would get the opening goal of the game at the 5:40 mark of the first period from Scott Ramaekers to make it 1-0. The game would stay there to the 5:09 mark of the second period when the Cardinals would tie the game up at 1-1 on the Jake Lanyi goal. The game would remain even till the midway mark of the third period when Spencer Bellina would score to give the Cardinals the 2-1 lead. Then with 2:30 left in the game, the Cardinals would ice the game away on Josh Belgrave's empty netter to give the Cardinals the 3-1 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals stayed perfect on the season at 5-0 and Elli Shiller made 19 saves in the winning effort. It would be a battle of the top ten teams in the nation as the #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #8 Geneseo State Knights in SUNYAC play in front of 1400 fans. The Cardinals would get off to a quick start just 58 seconds into the game on the Tio D'Addario goal for the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals would expand their lead to a 2-0 lead on the shorthanded goal by Joshua Belgrave. The Cardinals would finish off their three-goal period with 15 seconds left on the Kevin Weaver Vitale goal. The game would stay there until the 12-minute mark of the second period when the Cardinals Bennett Stockdale would light the lamp and take the 4-0 lead. Although two minutes later the Knights would strike twice within a minute to cut the lead in half at 4-2 on the Mitch Machlitt and Teddy Purcell goals. Then with 2:15 left in the period the Cardinals would regain their two goal when Bennett Stockdale would get his second goal of the game. The game would stay there till about there was 3:30 left in the game when the Cardinals would get the empty netter on Joshua Belgrave's second goal of the game to secure the 6-2 win. In the winning effort, Jacob Hearne would make 30 saves as the Cardinals went to 4-0 and the Knights fell to 4-1. It would be the home opener for the #7 Plattsburgh State Cardinals as they would begin the 2023-24 campaign with a game against the Castleton State Spartans from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in front of 1300 fans. The game would start off well for the home Cardinals as they would get the opening goal just 2:46 into the game on the Paul Bryer goal. The Cardinals would expand their lead just five minutes later on the Adam Tretowicz goal and take the 2-0 lead. Although just 42 seconds later the Spartans would get on the board and cut the lead in half at 2-1 on the Jackson Edwards goal. Then just about three minutes later the Spartans would tie the game up on the Josef Vyvial to make it 2-2. The game would stay there till the ten-minute mark of the second period when Lonan Bulger would score to give the Cardinals the 3-2 lead. Just two minutes later the Spartans would tie the game up again on the Andrew Stefura goal. That was the game would stay till the third period when the Cardinals would erupt for three powerplay goals from Josh Belgrave, Ryan Bonfield, and Tio D'Addario and secure the 6-3 victory. It would be a very physical game though as the teams would combine for 55 minutes in penalty minutes. In the winning effort, Eli Shiller would make 17 saves on the night as the Cardinals went to 2-0 on the season. Next up for the Cardinals, they will be on the road next weekend to start SUNYAC play against the Morrisville State Mustangs. Gallery

ECAC Tournament Championship: #2 Harvard Crimson Vs #5 Colgate Red Raiders March 18th 2023

Colgate's Carter Gylander (37) with the glove save on the quick wrister from Harvard's Marek Hejduk (13) as he would make 28 saves on the night for the title. It was time for the 2023 ECAC Hockey Championship. It would feature the powerhouse #2 seeded Harvard Crimson and the upstart and #5 seeded Colgate Red Raiders as they batt for this year's edition of the Whitelaw Cup at the Olympic Center Lake Placid in front of 3839 fans. The Red Raiders would come out firing as they were looking for the upset as Colton Young would get them on the board just 1:01 into the game with the powerplay goal. The game would stay there till the 12:47 mark of the period when brother Alex Young would give the Red Raiders the 2-0 lead and that's how the first period would end. In the second period, the Crimson would get on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1 on the Henry Thrun goal at the 6:01 mark. Although the 1 goal lead would be short-lived as Levi Glasman would score for the Red Raiders three minutes later to regain the two-goal lead at 3-1 and the game would stay there for the rest of the period. In the third period, the Crimson would keep fighting and get the game back within one with just over seven minutes left on the Matthew Coronato goal to make it a 3-2 game. From there though the Red Raider's defenses would be up to task as they would block 35 shots as a team in earning the 3-2 victory and being crowned the Whitelaw Cup champion for the first time since 1990 (33 years ago) and first for coach Don Vaughan along with giving the Red Raiders there first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014. In the winning effort, Carter Gylander would make 28 saves on 30 shots and 67 saves on 70 shots for the weekend in being named tournament Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. With the win, the Colgate Red Raiders will enter the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014 with a record of 19-15-5 and while the Crimson would come up short in winning the title they will also get a bid to the NCAA Tournament with a record of 24-7-2. ECAC Tournament Semi-Finals: #2 Harvard Crimson Vs #3 Cornell Big Red March 18th 2023

Harvard's Alex Laferriere (18) with the game-winner in overtime when he wrist pass Cornell's Ian Shane (30) to advance to the ECAC Tournament finals. It would be the second game of the day from the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY as part of the semi-final day of the ECAC Tournament and it would feature last year's conference tournament winner #2 Harvard Crimson, and the #3 Cornell Big Red for the right to face the #5 Colgate Red Raiders for the ECAC title the next day. These games would be all about the defenses and the physical play as the shots for the game would be 25-15 on the night in favor of the Crimson. These games would see only one goal in the game and it would take until the 4:28 mark of the overtime when Harvard's Alex LaFerriere would light the lamp and give the Crimson the 1-0 win. In the winning effort, Mitchell Gibson would make 15 saves on the night for the shutout victory and advance to the championship game against the Colgate Red Raiders. With the loss, the Cornell Big Red go to 20-10-2 on the season and will wait till selection Sunday to see if they make the NCAA Tournament. Gallery

ECAC Tournament Semi-Finals: #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats Vs #5 Colgate Red Raiders March 17th 2023

Quinnipiac's Ethan De Jong (10) ties the game up at one in the early stages of the third period with the powerplay goal. It would be the opening game of the ECAC Tournament final four from the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY and it would feature the #1 seeded and #3 ranked nationally the Quinnipiac Bobcats and the #5 seeded Colgate Red Raiders. The upset-minded Red Raiders would crack the ice first with just under 3:15 left in the first period on the Daniel Panetta goal to give the Red Raiders the 1-0 and that's where the first period would end. Both teams would have their chances throughout the second period although the defenses on both sides would stand tall as neither team would be able to find the back of the net and the Red Raiders would hold onto the 1-0 lead as they entered the third period. In the third period, the Bobcats would finally break into score collum on the powerplay goal by Ethan De Jong just 3:47 into the period. From there the defenses would hold tight and neither team could take advantage and they would end regulation tied at one. From there the teams would head to the overtime tied at one and it would not be for the lack of chances but the game-winner would take til the 8:50 mark of the second overtime when Ross Mitton would tap in the rebound passed an outstretched Yaniv Perets for the game-winner. With the win, the Colgate Red Raiders advance to the finals of the ECAC Tournament for the first time since 2014 and go for their first Whitelaw Cup since 1990. While the Quinnipiac Bobcats will wait till selection Sunday to see if they would stay on the one-line for the NCAA Tournament. Gallery

It would be the semi-finals on the SUNYAC Playoffs from the sold-out Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena as the #2 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #3 Geneseo State Knights for the right to head to the conference finals. The game would start off well for the home Cardinals as they would get the opening goal of the game at the 9:52 mark of the first period on the Bennett Stockdale for the 1-0 lead. The game would stay there all the way till the 9:45 mark of the second period when Brendan Young would score for the Cardinals and give them the 2-0 lead. The two-goal lead would be short-lived though as the Knights would get on the board two minutes later on the Domenic Garozzo goal and make it a 2-1 game. The game would stay there till the 4:32 mark of the third period when Luk Jirousek would light the lamp for the 3-1 game. Then with just over six minutes left in the game, Jake Lanyi would score for the Cardinals and make it a 4-1 lead. The Cardinals would add one more with just over thirty seconds left in the game when Carson Gallagher would get the empty netter for the 5-1 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals will advance to the SUNYAC championship and take on the top-seeded Oswego State Lakers for the conference's auto bid to the NCAA Tournament. Gallery

SUNYAC Men's Hockey: Potsdam State Bears @ #9 Plattsburgh State Cardinals February 10th 2023

Plattsburgh State's Carson Gallagher (28) jumps over the Potsdam State defender as he goes after the loose puck and charges to the net for the shot. It would be the regular season home finale for the #9 Plattsburgh State Cardinals as they would host north country and SUNYAC rival the Potsdam State Bears. The Cardinals would honor the five seniors on the team at the conclusion of their last regular season home game. The home Cardinals would get off to a quick start as they would take the 1-0 lead just 2:09 into the game on the Jake Lanyl go. Then just 29 seconds later the Cardinals would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Adam Tretowicz goa. However, it would be just under three minutes later at the 6:25 mark of the period when the Bears would get on the board cutting their deficit in half on the Robert Clerc. Then with just under six minutes left in the first period, the Bears would fight back and tie the game at two on the powerplay goal by Michael McArthur. The teams would go to the locker room and the Cardinals would come back refreshed as they would retake the lead just 4:49 into the second period on the Mitchell Hale goal. Then just over halfway through the period, the Cardinals would regain their two-goal lead on the Paul Bryer goal to make it a 4-2 game. Then just 1:17 left in the second period the Cardinals would make it a three-goal lead on Jake Lanyl's second goal of the night for the 5-2 lead. The Potsdam State Bears would look like they still had some fight in them as they started the third period just 3:43 into it with the Justin Vernance goal to make it a 5-3 game. Although the Cardinal's defense would stand tall the rest of the night as they would get the 5-3 win and go to 17-5-2 on the season, In the winning effort Jacob Hearne would make 25 saves for the win and will finish the regular season next Wednesday as they will travel to Morrisville State. SUNYAC Men's Hockey: Cortland State Red Dragons @ #13 Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 21st 2023

Plattsburgh State's Josh Belgrave would get the opening goal of the game on the scramble play in front of the net. The #13 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would finish off hall of fame weekend as they would host the Cortland State Red Dragons and before and during the game they would honor former coach Bob Emery, the 1980-81 team, and the 2000-01 team. As for the game itself, the Cardinals would dominate the game as the Cardinals would outshoot the Red Dragons 49-12 on the night. It would take all the way till the second period before we would have the first goal of the game and it would be from Josh Belgrave on the scramble in front of the net at the 9:436 mark of the period. The game would stay there till the 3:04 mark of the third period when the Red Dragons would tie the game at one on the Sutter Donegan goal. The game would stay there till there were about six minutes left in the game when the Cardinals would score on the Bennett Stockdale wrap-around goal to secure the 2-1 victory. In the winning effort, Eli Shiffler would make 11 saves as the Cardinals go to 13-4-2 on the season. The Cardinals will be back in action next weekend as they take to the road and will face off with the Brockport State Golden Eagles and Geneseo State Knights. Gallery

SUNYAC Men's Hockey: #6 Oswego State Lakers @ #13 Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 20th 2023

It would be the classic rivalry returning to the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena for their third match-up of the season as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Oswego State Lakers with both teams ranked inside the top 15 in the country. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be looking to avenge two earlier seasons' losses to the Lakers as they would take the early 1-0 lead just 5:27 into the first period on the Jacob Modry goal and with it, the red stress balls would hit the ice as it was stress ball night at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena. Then at the 12:03 mark of the period the Cardinals would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Riley Sutherland goal. That is where the game would stay all the way till the 41-second mark of the third period when Ryan Bonfield would score to make it a 3-0 Cardinal game. Then just three minutes later the Cardinals would take control of the game on the Carson Gallagher goal to make it a 4-0 Cardinals. Then on the powerplay at the 6:29 mark of the period the Cardinals would make it a 5-0 game on the Luk Jirousek goal. Then with under seven minutes left in the game the Cardinals would end their assault on the night on the Bennett Stockdale goal as it would be the sixth different scorer in the game. The Lakers would break up the shutout bid with under 4 minutes left in the game when Matt McQuade scored to make it a 6-1 game. In the winning effort, Eli Shiller would make 21 saves on 22 shots as they go to 12-4-2 on the season and will be back in action as they will play Cortland State on the hall of fame night at the Ronald Stafford Ice Arena. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would have a single home game on the weekend as they would have Williams Ephs from NESCAC as a yearly non league match up come to the Ronald B Stafford ice Arena. It would be physical and evenly matched game throughout with both teams looking for the upper hand in the match. It would take all the way till there was 3:30 left in the second period before we would have are first goal on the night and it would come from Plattsburgh State's Bennett Stockdale to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. That is where the game would remain until the final minute of the game when Bennett Stockdale would seal the game away with the empty netter to give the Cardinals the 2-0 win in front of 1,100 fans. In the winning effort Eli Shiller would make 26 saves in the shutout victory as the Cardinals go to 11-4-2 on the season. The Cardinals will be back in action next weekend as they will head back into conference play as they will meet up with Oswego and Cortland. Gallery

NCAA Division III Men's Hockey: Comfort Inn Winter Classic Championship: #9 Oswego State Lakers @ #15 Plattsburgh State Cardinals January 6th 2023

It would be time for the championship of the 40th annual Comfort Inn Winter Classic at the Ronald B Stafford Arena and it would feature the classic rivalry this time with both of them ranked in the top 15 as the #15 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #9 Oswego State Lakers. The game would start off great for the home Cardinals as they would score just 1:46 into the game on the breakaway goal from Adam Tretowicz. The Lakers would fight back and tie the game on the powerplay goal from Daniel Colabufo at the 13:47 mark of the period. Then with 34 seconds left in the first, the Laker's powerplay would strike again this time from Quinn Warmuth for the 2-1 lead. That would be all the scoring for the game but that would not be the whole story as the Cardinals would have their chances throughout the last two periods to tie the game but the Laker's defense would stand tall. With the win, the Lakers would be named the 40th annual Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic champions as the Cardinals fall to 9-4-2 on the season in front of a crowd of 1384. NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Comfort Inn Winter Classic Consolation: Wentworth Leopards Vs Potsdam State Bears January 7th 2023

It would be the consolation game of the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic and would feature the Wentworth Leopards and the Potsdam State Bears. It would take a bit to get the game going but the Leopards would get the opening goal of the game at the 11:52 mark of the first period on the powerplay from Josh Faussett for the 1-0 lead. The game would stay there till just under five minutes left in the second period when the Leopards would strike again on the powerplay from Nikolas Sombrowski for the 2-0 lead. Then the Leopards would be looking to put the game away early in the third period with the powerplay with the goal by Nolan Lowe at 5:31 to make it 3-0 Leopards. although the Bears were not going to go out without a swing as they would score 56 seconds later from Ryan Mahlmeister to make it 3-1. With 7:54 left in the game, the Leopards would regain the three-goal lead at 4-1 on goal by Jacob Shankar. Although again the Bears would strike right back 37 seconds later on a goal by Michael McArthur to make it a two-goal game again at 4-2. The Bears would keep fighting and with just over five minutes left in the game they would make it a one-goal game on the powerplay goal from Drew Rose. That would end the comeback attempt by the Bears though although not without chances down the stretch including a 6x4 in the final minute that they could not find the equalizer on. In the winning effort, Jack McGovern would make 24 saves on the afternoon as the Leopards go to 3-9-1 on the season the Bears fall to 4-11-1. Gallery

Plattsburgh State's Bennett Stockdale (15) from a knee taps in the puck to give the Cardinals the lead again. It would be the second game of the day at the Comfort Inn Winter Classic and the host #15 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be meeting up with the Wentworth Leopards for their first home game of 2023 in front of 1,100 fans. The game would start well for the home Cardinals as they would score just 2:13 into the game from Ryan Bonfield for the Cardinal's 1-0 lead. Although the Leopards were not just going lay down and let the Cardinals walk away with the game as they would even the game up at 1 at the 7:38 mark of the period on a goal from Luke Jefferies. The Cardinals would answer back in the final two minutes of the period on a goal from Luk Jirousek and take the 2-1 lead at the break. Although the Leopards were not going away and would come back again and tie the game at 2 at the 11:18 mark of the second period on a goal from Nolan Lowe. Once again the Cardinals would answer late in the period this time with under 30 seconds left in the period on a goal from Bennett Stockdale to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. From there Cardinals would hold on for the win as Brendan Young would score twice in the third period to seal the game away for the 5-2 victory. In the winning effort, Jacob Hearne would make 20 saves as the Cardinals go to 9-3-2 on the season and will face arch-rival #9 Oswego State Lakers in the championship of the Comfort Inn Winter Classic. NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Comfort Inn Winter Classic: Potsdam State Bears Vs #9 Oswego State Lakers January 6th 2023

Oswego State's Shane Bull (24) comes down the breakaway and beats the Bear's goalie to tie the game at three in the third period. It would be the opening game of the 40th Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic as the Potsdam State Bears and #9 Oswego State Lakers would face off. The upset-minded Bears would get the first goal of the game just 5:24 in from Jack Bloem to take the 1-0 lead. That is where the game would stand till the 5:31 mark of the second period when the Bears would double their lead at 2-0 on the Justin Vernace goal. The Lakers would finally have an answer at the 8:30 mark of the period on the Connor Sleeth goal to make it a 2-1 game. Although just 90 seconds later the Bears would regain their two-goal lead on the Josh Bifolch goal at 3-1. Although the Lakers would come back on the powerplay about three minutes later and make it a one-goal game again. That is where the game would stay till about the 11:30 mark of the third period when Shane Bull would score for the Lakers and tie the game at three. That would be where the game would officially end as there was no scoring the rest of the period or in overtime but because of the tourney they would go to the shootout to decide it and the Lakers would win 2-0. So with that, the Lakers would advance to the finals of the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic. Gallery
