It would be a match-up inside the New England Hockey Conference as the #9 Skidmore Thoroughbreds would take on the Southern Maine Huskies in front of 900 passionate fans at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rink. The home Thoroughbreds would get the opening goal of the game at the 4:42 mark of the first period when Patrick Kaeden scored at the 4:42 mark for the 1-0 lead. The Huskies would be able to get the equalizer though on the shorthand when John Hagan would light the lamp at the 8"34 mark of the period to tie the game at one and that's how the first period would end. The Thoroughbreds would be able to retake the lead at 2-1 on the Mason Beecher goal at the 5:48 mark. The lead would be short-lived as the Huskies would answer back about 90 seconds later to tie the game at two on the Jakub Suran goal. Then about three minutes later the Huskies would forge ahead and get the go-ahead goal at the 10:37 mark on the Ethan McDuffie for the 3-2 Huskies lead. The game would stay there till the 11:51 mark of the third period when Matt Sullivan would score on the Huskies powerplay to make it a 4-2 game. From there the Husky's defense would stand tall and hold on for the 4-2 upset victory over the #9 Skidmore Thoroughbreds. In the winning effort, the Huskies Mason Palmer would make 41 saves as they go to 8-12-3 on the season. For the Thoroughbreds Brandon Tate would make 23 saves as they fall to 16-5-3 on the season. The home Cardinals would waste little time in getting the opening goal of the game just 5:28 into the game on the Josh Belgrave goal. They would stay there till the 3:51 mark of the second period when the Cadets would get the equalizer from Owen Sclisizzi and tie the game at one. Then just about two minutes later the Cadets would forge ahead on the powerplay goal from Clark Kerner for the 2-1 lead. The Cardinals were not going to let the Cadets lead last long as they would score three minutes later and tie the game at two on the Trey Thomas goal. The game would stay there till the 11:33 mark of the third period when the teams would combine for four goals in just over six minutes of action scoring would be Aaron Catroon and Jake Lanyi for the Cardinals Johnny Johnson and Ben Van Waterschoot for the Cadets. From there they would have no more scoring in the final two minutes of regulation and the five minutes of three-on-three for overtime. As the Cardinals would get the tie on the night and go to 15-3-2 on the season as Elli Shiller would make 25 saves on the night. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are named the 2023 Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout champion for the second year in a row and seventh overall. It would be time for the championship of the Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout and it would be a rematch of last year's title game this time though at Plattsburgh State as the #11 Norwich Cadets would take on the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals in front of 1400 fans. It would take until the second period before we would get the opening goal of the game when Kevin Weaver Vitale would break the ice and get a goal at the 8:25 mark of the second period to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. The one-goal game would be short-lived as the Cardinals would expand the to 2-0 27 seconds later on the power play goal from Tio D'Addario. The Cadets would come back about six minutes later and make it a one-goal game again on the Pual Schmid goal. From there the Cardinal defense would do the rest as there would be no scoring the rest of the night to give the Cardinals the 2-1 victory and a second straight Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout championship as they would stay undefeated on the season at 8-0. Eighht Layer Great Northern Shootout Semi-Finals: #11 Norwich Cadets Vs Middlebury Panthers November 24th 2023

It would be the return of the Great Northern Shootout this time brought to you by Layer Eight and the opening game of the tournament would see the battle of Vermont as the #11 Norwich Cadets would take on instate rival the Middlebury Panthers at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena. The game would start off well for the Cadets as they would get the early 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game on Holden Doggett's goal. Then inside the final two minutes of the period, the Cadets would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Brady Harroun goal. The Cadets would start to take control of the game as they would extend the lead to 3-0 on the powerplay goal six minutes into the second period on the Cooper Bertrand goal. The Panthers would answer right back 17 seconds later on the goal from Andrej Hromic to get the game back to a two-goal game at 3-1. The Cadets would retake the three-goal lead with just over two minutes left in the period on the Patrick O'Neal powerplay goal to make it a 4-1 game. In the third period, the Cadets would seal the game away on three unanswered goals from Clark Kerner, Joe Nagle, and Devon Thibodeau as they would secure the 7-1 win. In the winning effort, Sami Molu would make 17 saves as they go to 5-2-1 on the season and will take on the winner of the Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the St Olaf Oels in the championship of the Great Northern Shootout. The Cadets of Norwich would get the scoring started with 8 minutes left in the first period on the Morgan Tefft goal and the 1-0 lead. That is where the game would stay til the 1:49 mark of the second period when the Cardinals Mae Olshansky foal. Then just about 90 seconds life in thee period on the Nicole Unsworth goal in the second period and the 2-1 lead. That is where the game would stay until we hit the 9:12 mark of the second period when the Cadets would tie the game on the Taylor Girouard goal. That is where the game would stay til there was 2:53 left in the game when Sara Krauseneck when the Cardinals would take the 3-2. Then the Cadets would strike for two goals in 28 seconds when Nikki LaGue and Taylor Girouard goals and take a 4-3 lead with two minutes left in the game. Although while the Cardinals were on the penalty kill they pulled the goal and with 19 seconds left Mattie Norton would score and tie the game at four. In that overtime frame Plattsburgh from Norwich Cadet would get the game winner with just over 90 seconds in the game. In the wining effort the Cardinals would take the 5-4 win. In the winning effort the Cardinals go to 5-0 while the Golden Knights fall to 5-4 and send the just over 350 fans next weekend for the Cardinals is a homestand as they Buffalo State and Morrisville Mustangs.
