Dirtcar Racing: 71st Season Openner 2nd Annual Leon Gonyo Memorial @ Airborne Park Speedway April 13th 2025

It would be the 2025 season opener from the Airborne Park Speedway, and it would be the earliest in the 71-year history of the track, as we took the green on April 13th, and it would mark the return of the Airborne Park Speedway under the Dirtcar banner after a year away. Jake Fountain (22) and Glen Engstrom (17) battle for the win down the stretch as they go after the win in the 15-lap main for the Mini Stocks. The season would start with the 2nd annual Leon Gonyo Memorial, 4 thousand to win for the 358 Modifieds and two thousand to win for Sportsman Modified, along with the Renegades, Crown Vics, Limited Sportsman Modifieds, and Mini Stocks, as there would be over 130 cars in the pits. After all the time trials, heats, and last chance qualifiers were done, it would be onto the mains, and the first one up would be the Crown Vics. It would be a six-car field and see Richie Turner get the lead-off start, but Eric Friend would come up challenging from his last row start, take the lead, and cruise to the win, as we would get our second straight Crown Vic win at the Airborne Speedway. After the intermission, it would be onto the Sportsman Modified 2 thousand to win 30 lap main event. It would see Fire Swamp get the early lead from the early start of the race. Still, there would be a challenge up front from an old rival as the six-time track champion would come up and battle for the lead with Nick Heywood, and just over halfway through the race, he would take the lead. Still, it would not be without challenge as Swamp and Donovan Lussier would stay in sight and challenge for the lead, but Heywood would win today. Then it would be onto the main event of the evening, the Leon Gonyo Memorial, a 4 to win 358 Modified 40 lapper. It would see Felix Roy go wire to wire for the win, and it would be a Roy 1-2 finish. Jeremy would finish second, and then Jackson Gill would get third to round out the top three. Then we would be onto the Renegades for their 20-lap feature and see last year's champion, Shawn Duquette, get the lead off the start of the race. Still, there would be a challenge from last year's 2nd place man, Tyor Terry, and they would duke it out for the win, and on this day, it would be Tyor Terry getting the win and the early edge on the season. Then it would be onto the Limited Sportsman Modified and their 15-lap event, and see Gary English go wire to wire for the win. Then the final race of the evening would be the Mini Stocks, a 15-lap event, and 25 cars would take the green. It would see Jake Fountain get the lead at the start of the race and would be sailing around in the lead, but there would be a late race surge from Glen Engstrom, but it would come up about a car length short at the checkered flag, and Jake Fountain would get the opening win of the season. The racetrack will return to life next weekend, April 19th, as the Sprint Cars of New England invade the track with their 360s. Gallery

Section X Boys' Lacrosse: Ogdensburg Blue Devils @ Plattsburgh Hornets April 11th 2025

Plattsburgh's Declan Baker (13) scored the goal as he fell down in front of the net for his second goal of the afternoon. It would be the 2025 home opener for the Plattsburgh Hornets as they would take on the Ogdensburg Blue Devils to start their 2025 Section X season. The Blue Devils would jump out to a big lead after the first quarter at 8-1, and scoring for the Blue Devils would be Ty Jacobs (twice), Aiden O'Neil (fourth), Brody Barrett, Tegan Frederick, and scoring for the Honets would be Alek Duprey. In the second quarter the defense would be the name of the game all around as the Hornets would win the lower scoring quarter at 3-1 as Declan and Killan Baker along with Alek Duprey second of the game and getting the one goal for the Blue Devils would be Tegan Frederick second of the game to make it a 9-4 Blue Devils lead at the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Blue Devils would take control of the game with a 3-0 quarter as Nathan Irvine, Ty Jacobs (third of the game), and Aiden O'Neil (fifth of the game) made it a 12-4 game after the third quarter. In the fourth quarter with the outcome no longer in doubt the teams would empty the benches and the Blue Devils would win the quarter 2-1 on Tanner Fonda and Kaden Bogart goal for the Blue Devils and getting the lone goal for the Hornets would be Declan Baker as the Blue Devils secuer the 14-5 victory. In the winning effort, the Blue Devils Jackson Thronhill would make eight saves as they go to 4-0 on the season as they head into their next gam against the Salmon River Shamrocks. As for the Plattsburgh Hornets, they will fall to 0-3 on the season as they head into their last game before the break against the St Lawerence Larries. Gallery

ECAC Hockey Tournament Semi-Finals: #1 Quinnipiac Bobcats Vs #6 Cornell Big Red March 22nd 2024

Quinnipac's Chris Pelosi (28) gets the goal that he roofs to give the Bobcats the 2-1 lead late in the third period. The ECAC Hockey would make their annual return to Lake Placid and the home of Miracles for their final four, and their first game would see the #1 Quinnipac Bobcats and the #6 Cornell Big Red battle for a spot in the championship game Saturday evening in front of 5300 fans. The Big Red would start the scoring in the first period when Jonathan Castagna would strike on the powerplay for his fifth goal of the season to give them the 1-0 lead with just 4 seconds left in the first period. In the second period, the Bobcats would answer back at the 14:09 mark when Andon Cerbone would score his 15th of the season and tie the game at one, and that's how the game would go to the third period. In the third period, the Bobcats would get their first lead at 14:42 when Chris Pelosi scored. Then with the Big Red down a man and pulling the goalie to even it back up, Kyler Kovich would score for his fifth goal of the season to send the game to overtime. In overtime, the Bobcats would take a slashing penalty, and Tim Reggo would rifle it past the goaltender for the game winner at the 14:39 mark of the overtime and advance to the finals with a 3-2 victory to take on the winner of Clarkson and Dartmouth in the other semi-finals. In the winning effort for the Big Red, Ian Shane would make 22 saves in the afternoon as they go to 17-10-6 in the season. As for the Bobcats, Matej Marinov would make 19 saves as they fall to 24-11-2 and wait to see if they're in the NCAA Tournament. Gallery

ECAC Tournament Semi-Finals: #2 Clarkson Golden Knights Vs #5 Dartmouth Big Green March 21st 2025

Clarkson's Ty Brassington (44) and Dartmouth's Cam Macdonald (15) have a meeting of the minds as they go after the loose puck at the blueline by the benches. It would be the second semi-final game of the day from the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY, as it would be a part of the championship weekend in front of 5300 fans. It would be tight through the first period as both teams would have chances, but no one could light the lamp, and there would be no score after the first period. The Golden Knights would get the game's opening goal at the 1:04 mark of the second period when Ryan Bottrill would score for his eighth goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights would be able to double up their lead at 2-0 when Tristan Sarsland would score just over 4 minutes later for his eighth of the season, and that's where the second period would end at 2-0, Clarkson. When the teams returned for the third period, the Golden Knights would extend their lead to 3-0 just 4:54 into the period when Trey Taylor would score his 9th of the season. The Big Green would keep coming and get on the board with 4:28 left in the game when John Fusco scored his 11th of the season to make it interesting down the stretch. However, the Golden Knights would put the icing on the cake with 1:50 left in the game when Ayrton Martino would get his 25th of the season to secure the 4-1 win for the Golden Knights. In the winning effort for the Golden Knights, Ethan Langenegger would make 25 saves as they go to 24-11-3 on the season and advance to the ECAC Hockey Championship against the Cornell Big Red tomorrow. As for the Dartmouth Big Green, Roan Clarke would have 11 saves as the season ended at 18-13-2. Gallery

ECAC Tournament Championship: #2 Clarkson Golden Knights Vs #6 Cornell Big Red March 22nd 2025

Cornell's Nick Desantis (28) with the goal on the break-in as he beats the sprawled-out Clarkson's Ethan Langenegger (1) to give the Big Red the 2-0 lead. It would be the 2025 ECAC Hockey Men's Hockey Championship from the famed Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY, and it would feature the #2 Clarkson Golden Knights going against the #6 Cornell Big Red, who are looking for back-to-back Whitelaw Cups in front of 6000 fans. The Big Red would get the game's first goal at just 5:11 when Ondrej Psenicka beat the netminder for the 1-0 lead as the Big Red looked to respond. Then it would be just 1:52 later when the Big Red would extend their lead to 2-0 when Nick Desantis would score his eighth of the season, and that's where the first period would end. The game would stay there till the 13:23 mark of the second period when the Golden Knights would make it a one-goal game at 2-1 on Erik Bargholtz's sixth goal of the season, and that's where the period would end. In the third period, the game would go back and forth with both teams having their chances to get one, including the tying goal by the Knights. Although the only goal of the period would be the empty netter by Ryan Walsh to seal the deal with 1:49 left in the game to give the Cornell Big Red their second straight title at 3-1 and punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. NYSPHSAA Northern Regional Class D Girl's Basketball Championship: #6 Chateaugay Bulldogs Vs #9 Schroon Lake Wildcats March 1st 2025

Chateaugay's Irelynn Laplante (12) takes flight on the breakaway score for two of her 16 points on the afternoon. It would be regional finals day from the Clinton Community College with a ticket to the final four on the line, starting with the Class D Girls. It would see the #6 Chateaugay Bulldogs from Section X taking on the # 9 Schroon Lake Wildcats from Section VII. The game would start quickly, but it would be good for the visiting Bulldogs as they would jump out to an 11-lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs would use their quick shooting to jump on, take control of the game with a 16-5 quarter, and take the 33-16 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Bulldogs would keep up their tight defense, have another good quarter at 10-5, and take the 43-21 lead into the final quarter. With the outcome of the game well out of doubt, the coaches would put the benches in for the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs would win the low-scoring quarter at 6-3 as they would secure the 49-24 victory. In the winning effort for the Chateaugay Bulldogs, they will punch their ticket to the final four and get the winner of LaFragville and South Knighton at Hudson Valley Community College. In the win for the Bulldogs, Madison McComb and Irelynn Laplante each had 16 points as they went to 24-1 in the season. As for the Schroon Lake Wildcats' season, it would end at 14-8, while Olivia Hartwell would lead the team with 13 points. Gallery

NYSPHSAA Northern Regional Class C Boy's Basketball Championship: #1 Berne Knox Westerlo Bulldogs Vs #13 Moriah Vikings March 15th 2025

Berne Knox Westerlo's Dayne Coate (1), with the runner in the lane, threw off the window for the score as part of an eight-point game. It would be the second game of championship day from the Clinton Community College and this time it would be the boy's this time as the #1 Berne Knox Westerlo Bulldogs and the #13 Moriah Vikings as they battle for the Northern Region title and a spot in the final four as the Vikings look to make the return trip. Getting started would be a fast-paced game, but the Buldogs would have a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, though, the Bulldogs would start to take control of the game as they would have a great quarter at 21-10 and take the 37-20 lead into the locker room. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Vikings would do their best to get back in the game, but it would be a fairly even quarter with the Vikings getting the 17-16 quarter as the Bulldogs would take the 53-37 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter would be another high-scoring quarter, with most of the points coming from the foul line as the Bulldogs would have the 26-21 quarter to secure the 79-58 win. In the winning effort for the Bulldogs, they would stay undefeated in the season as Shake Kirker would lead the way with 36 points as they go to NYS Final Four next weekend. As for the Moriah Vikings, the season would end at 18-6 as Cooper Allen would lead the way with 24 points. Gallery

NCAA Division III Women's Hockey First Round: Elmira Soaring Eagles @ Plattsburgh State Cardinals March 15th 2025

Elmira's Sara Sevcikova (33) with the pad save on Plattsburgh State's Claria Wall (34) shot in close as part of a 40 save shutout afternoon. It would be the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Tournament, and it would see an old rivalry renewed at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Elmira Soaring Eagles with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. The Soaring Eagles would get the game's opening goal at the 13:57 mark of the first period when Erika Goleniak would light the lamp, and that's where the lead would stand at the end of first period. When the teams returned for the second period both teams would have there chances to get a goal as the Cardinals would lead the period 14-6 shots on goal but would not be able to get one in the net so the Soaring Eagles would hold onto the 1-0 lead as they went to the third period. Once again, in that period, the Cardinals would lead the way with 11 shots to 5, but they couldn't score, and the Eagles would get a 1-0 win. In the winning effort for the Soaring Eagles, Sara Sevcikova would make 40 saves in the shutout victory as they go to 21-7-1 on the season and advance to the quarterfinals against Wisconsin River Falls. As for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, their season would end at 20-7-1. Gallery

NYSPHSAA Division II Boy's Hockey Regional Finals: #10 Saranac Spartans Vs #6 Queensbury Spartans March 7th, 2025

Queenbury's Egan Breault (31) with the diving stop on Saranac's Landon Giroux (17) as he looked to break up the shutout. It would be the quarterfinals of the New York State Boys' Hockey Division II Tournament, and it would see #6 Queensbury Spartans and #10 Saranac Spartans from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena, with the winner going to the Final Four in Buffalo, NY, next weekend. The Queensbury Spartans would get the game's opening goal in the eighth minute of the first period when Oliver Coughlin would score, which would be the only scoring of the period. When we returned for the second period, Queensbury came out on fire as they scored three goals in the first five minutes from Cameron Porter (twice) and Ethan Kelsey to give the 4-0 lead after the second period. Queensbury would keep it going and make it 5-0 at the 8:32 mark of the third period when Ethan Kelsey would complete his hat trick. Queenbury would keep it coming and extend their lead to 6-0 at 11:11, when Cameron Porter would also score to complete a hat trick on the night. Then, in the game's closing minutes, Queensbury would get one more from Ollie Coughlan, and they secured the 7-0 victory. In the winning effort, the Queensbury Spartans will advance to the final four of the New York State Tournament, where they will get the winner of Rye and Ogdensburg. As for the Saranac Spartans, their season will come to an unfortunate end at a record of 14-8-1. Gallery

Section VII Champion Challenge Boy's Basketball: #4 Bolton Eagles Vs #17 Moriah Vikings March 6th 2025

Bolton's Jace Hubert (3) takes it in flight along the baseline for the score as he would lead the team with 23 points on the night, but the Moriah Vikings would get the 76-62 victory. It would be the opening game of the Section VII Champions Challenge Boys' Basketball as the #4 Bolton Eagles from Class D would take the #17 Moriah Vikings from Class C at the Clinton Community College gym. The Vikings would surge to a big lead after the first quarter as they would have a 23-6 lead. In the second quarter, the Eagles offense would come to life, but the Vikings would stay hot as the Vikings would win the quarter 24-16 and take the 47-22 lead into the break. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the offense explosion on both sides continued, as the Eagles won the quarter at 15-14, but the Vikings still led at 61-37. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles would do their best to get back in the game, but the deficit would be too much as they would win the quarter at 25-15, but the Vikings would hold on for the 76-62 victory. In the winning tournament for the Vikings, they would go to 1 on the season, as Cooper Allen went for 38 points, and Tandy headheaded their New York State Tournament game against the Lisbon Golden Knights. As for the Bolton Eagles would fall to 21-2 on the season as Jace Hubert would have 23 points as they head into their New York State Tournament game against Harrisville on March 11th. Gallery
