Southern Maine's Mason Palmer with the body save on Skidmore's Zach Lindewirth (47) to at the time preserve the one-goal lead. It would be a match-up inside the New England Hockey Conference as the #9 Skidmore Thoroughbreds would take on the Southern Maine Huskies in front of 900 passionate fans at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rink. The home Thoroughbreds would get the opening goal of the game at the 4:42 mark of the first period when Patrick Kaeden scored at the 4:42 mark for the 1-0 lead. The Huskies would be able to get the equalizer though on the shorthand when John Hagan would light the lamp at the 8"34 mark of the period to tie the game at one and that's how the first period would end. The Thoroughbreds would be able to retake the lead at 2-1 on the Mason Beecher goal at the 5:48 mark. The lead would be short-lived as the Huskies would answer back about 90 seconds later to tie the game at two on the Jakub Suran goal. Then about three minutes later the Huskies would forge ahead and get the go-ahead goal at the 10:37 mark on the Ethan McDuffie for the 3-2 Huskies lead. The game would stay there till the 11:51 mark of the third period when Matt Sullivan would score on the Huskies powerplay to make it a 4-2 game. From there the Husky's defense would stand tall and hold on for the 4-2 upset victory over the #9 Skidmore Thoroughbreds. In the winning effort, the Huskies Mason Palmer would make 41 saves as they go to 8-12-3 on the season. For the Thoroughbreds Brandon Tate would make 23 saves as they fall to 16-5-3 on the season. Plattsburgh State's Trey Thomas (14) with the hard open ice hit on Norwich's Paul Schmid (19) as they were going after the loose puck. It would be a matchup inside the top of NCAA Division III Men's Hockey at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena as the #4 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host long-time nonconference rival the #12 Norwich Cadets in front of 1300 passionate fans for the midweek tilt. The home Cardinals would waste little time in getting the opening goal of the game just 5:28 into the game on the Josh Belgrave goal. They would stay there till the 3:51 mark of the second period when the Cadets would get the equalizer from Owen Sclisizzi and tie the game at one. Then just about two minutes later the Cadets would forge ahead on the powerplay goal from Clark Kerner for the 2-1 lead. The Cardinals were not going to let the Cadets lead last long as they would score three minutes later and tie the game at two on the Trey Thomas goal. The game would stay there till the 11:33 mark of the third period when the teams would combine for four goals in just over six minutes of action scoring would be Aaron Catroon and Jake Lanyi for the Cardinals Johnny Johnson and Ben Van Waterschoot for the Cadets. From there they would have no more scoring in the final two minutes of regulation and the five minutes of three-on-three for overtime. As the Cardinals would get the tie on the night and go to 15-3-2 on the season as Elli Shiller would make 25 saves on the night. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are named the 2023 Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout champion for the second year in a row and seventh overall. It would be time for the championship of the Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout and it would be a rematch of last year's title game this time though at Plattsburgh State as the #11 Norwich Cadets would take on the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals in front of 1400 fans. It would take until the second period before we would get the opening goal of the game when Kevin Weaver Vitale would break the ice and get a goal at the 8:25 mark of the second period to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead. The one-goal game would be short-lived as the Cardinals would expand the to 2-0 27 seconds later on the power play goal from Tio D'Addario. The Cadets would come back about six minutes later and make it a one-goal game again on the Pual Schmid goal. From there the Cardinal defense would do the rest as there would be no scoring the rest of the night to give the Cardinals the 2-1 victory and a second straight Layer Eight Great Northern Shootout championship as they would stay undefeated on the season at 8-0. Plattsburgh State's Tio D'Addario (9) bangs in the goal on the short side to give the Cardinals the 6-3 lead late in the game. It would be the home opener for the #7 Plattsburgh State Cardinals as they would begin the 2023-24 campaign with a game against the Castleton State Spartans from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in front of 1300 fans. The game would start off well for the home Cardinals as they would get the opening goal just 2:46 into the game on the Paul Bryer goal. The Cardinals would expand their lead just five minutes later on the Adam Tretowicz goal and take the 2-0 lead. Although just 42 seconds later the Spartans would get on the board and cut the lead in half at 2-1 on the Jackson Edwards goal. Then just about three minutes later the Spartans would tie the game up on the Josef Vyvial to make it 2-2. The game would stay there till the ten-minute mark of the second period when Lonan Bulger would score to give the Cardinals the 3-2 lead. Just two minutes later the Spartans would tie the game up again on the Andrew Stefura goal. That was the game would stay till the third period when the Cardinals would erupt for three powerplay goals from Josh Belgrave, Ryan Bonfield, and Tio D'Addario and secure the 6-3 victory. It would be a very physical game though as the teams would combine for 55 minutes in penalty minutes. In the winning effort, Eli Shiller would make 17 saves on the night as the Cardinals went to 2-0 on the season. Next up for the Cardinals, they will be on the road next weekend to start SUNYAC play against the Morrisville State Mustangs. Gallery

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals celebrate as they tie the game up with just over three minutes left. In a rematch from the First Light Great Northern Shootout Championship, a couple of weeks the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #9 Norwich Cadets. The game would remain scoreless all the way until the 4:34 mark of the second period when the Cadets would get the opening goal from Isaac Chapman for the 1-0 lead. Then at the 10:23 mark of the period, the Cadets would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Clark Kerner goal. Although at the 14:04 mark of the period the Cardinals would get on the board on the Adam Tretowicz goal to make it 2-1. The Cardinals would keep fighting and with three minutes left in the game, they would find the equalizer from Jacob Moody to make it 2-2. So in the rematch there would be no winner as the game would finish 2-2 after a five-minute 3x3 overtime, With the decision, the Cardinals go to 6-4-2 on the season as Anthony Del Tuffo would make 19 saves on the night. The Cardinals will finish out the first portion of the season on the road against the Morrisville State Cardinals. Gallery

The #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Castleton State Spartans in a nonconference game as they would welcome back former assistant Steve Moffit. The game would remain scoreless until the last two minutes of the first when Castleton's Charles Bando would give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals would answer back at 3:42 of the second period and tie the game at one on Michael Radisa's goal. The Cardinals would then take the 2-1 lead at 7:35 of the second the short-handed goal. The Cardinals would extend the lead to 3-1 on Graham Yeo's first college goal at 11:35. Then two minutes later Alex Jensen would get his second goal of the night for the 4-1 lead. Then at 6:26 of the third Michael Cassidy would get into the scoring act as the Cardinals take the 5-1 lead. Then in the final 30 seconds of game Alex Jensen would finish off the hat trick as the Cardinals cruised to the 6-1 win. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Babson Beavers in the finals of the 2018 WB Mason Winter Classic. The Cardinals would strike first with the opening goal 11 minutes into the first period from Cole Stallard. The Cardinals would extend the lead 2 minutes into the second period on the Rich McCartney goal to make it 2-0. The game would stay there till the 7-minute mark of the third period when Rich McCartney would get his second goal of the night to make it 3-0. The Beavers would get on the broad with 5 minutes left in the third on a Patrick Flynn goal to make it 3-1. Then with under two minutes left the Cardinals would add an empty netter from Greg Malafronte to secure the 4-1 victory. In the winning effort, Lawson Fenton would make 29 saves as the Cardinals go to 7-7 on the season.Gallery
