Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Football Week #2 Peru Nighthawks @ Beekmantown Eagles September 9th 2023

It would only be the second week of the high school football season but it would be a big match-up as the Beekmantown Eagles would host long-time rival the Peru Nighthawks for early season bragging rights. The Eagles would get on the board first in the early stages of the first quarter with a field goal and take a 3-0 lead. However, the Nighthawks would answer back as time would expire in the first quarter on a 75-yard run by Sawyer Schlitt and take the 7-3 lead. Halfway through the second quarter the Eagles would soar and retake the lead at 10-7 on a 80-yard pass to Zack Lapier for the score. Although with just under 2 minutes left in the half, the Nighthawks and Sawyer Schlitt would strike again for his second score of the game and take the 13-10 lead at the intermission. The Eagles would come out flying in the third quarter as Nathan Parliament would score on a fifteen-yard run and retake the lead at 17-10. However, from there the Nighthawks would take control of the game as Sawyer Schlitt would score two more times and take a 27-17 lead after the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Nighthawks would put an end to the rivalry game on this night when Landon Duprey would have a pick 6 for 85 yards and secure the 33-17 win. In the winning effort, the Nighthawks go to 2-0 while the Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season. The Nighthawks will look to see if they stay undefeated next week as they host the Plattsburgh Hornets while the Eagles will look to get their first win of the season as they will travel to Moriah. Peru's Sawyer Schlitt (33) is breaking tackles as he comes around the corner as part of a 4-score game. It would be the second week of action high school football in New York and the Saranac Spartans would host the Ogdensburg Blue Devils from section ten in nonconference action. The Spartans would get the opening score of the game on an 88-yard break-out play by Nathan Hamel to take the 7-0 lead five minutes into the game. The game would stay there till midway through the second quarter when the Spartans would strike again this time on a 33-yard pass to Alex Clancey to extend their lead to 14-0 and that's where the game would be at the half. Although when the teams would come back for the second half the Spartans would bring their offense with them as they would score on a 1-yard run by Nathan Hamel to extend the lead to 20-0 halfway through the third quarter. Then on the next offensive drive for the Blue Devils, Spartans Isaiah Lopez would pick up the fumble and take it in for the score to give the Spartans the 27-0 lead. Then as time would expire in the third quarter the Spartans would strike again on a 22-yard pass to Bryce Deangelo to extend their lead to 33-0. In the fourth quarter with just over half the quarter left Addison Kelting would score on a 25-yard run and the Spartans would take the 40-0 lead. However, the Blue Devils would be able to avoid the shutout as they would score in the closing minutes of the game. Although the Spartans would get the 40-6 win they would go to 2-0 on the season as the Blue Devils started 0-1. Gallery

It would be the opening weekend of High School Football in New York and the Plattsburgh Hornets would start off by welcoming the Hudson Falls Tigers in for a nonconference game. The Tigers would start the scoring off just over 8 minutes into the game with a 2-yard run by David Gonzalez for the 8-0 lead. The Hornets would answer back with just under 90 seconds left in the first quarter on a 29-yard pass to Dominic Deangelo and get the two-point conversion to tie the game at eight after the first quarter. That is where the game would stay until there was 1:23 left in the third quarter when Jayden Harwick would score for the Tigers and get the two-point conversion to take the 16-8 lead. However, the Hornets would answer right back with three seconds left in the third quarter on a 61-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Deangelo for the second score of the game and tie the game 16 after the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers would retake the lead once again four minutes into the fourth quarter when Peyton Dupuis scored on a five-yard run with 7:36 left in the game and got the two-point conversion to take the 24-16 lead. Although the Hornets would answer right back as Landon Ladue would take back the ensuing kickoff for a 73-yard score they would come up short on the two-point conversion and the Tigers would hold the 24-22 lead and get the win. In the winning effort, the Hudson Falls Tigers would start the season 1-0 as they head to conference play and take on Glens Falls. The Hornets will look to get the ship going again as they will take on the Saranac Lake Red Storm. Gallery

The #12 Peru Nighthawks would travel to Saranac Lake and take on the Red Storm in the last week of the regular season as they would look to finish off the perfect regular season. In the first quarter both teams would get on the board although the Nighthawks would have the 7-3 lead as there defense would stand tall. Although with under four minutes left in the second quarter the Red Storm would take the 10-7 lead on a 4 yard run by Connor Hewitt. The Nighthawks although would get the ball back before the half would expire and drive down the field and take the 14-10 lead in the closing minute of the half on a 5 yard run by Jack Hanson. In the third quarter the Nighthawks offense would step up and take control of the game. They would get the scoring started just 1:17 into the quarter on a 28 yard run by Jack Hanson for the 21-10 lead. The just half way through the quarter the Nighthawks would strike again this time on a ten yard run by Landon Duprey and extend the lead to 27-10. Then with under two minutes left in the quarter the Nighthawks would strike again this time on a nine yard pass to Landon Duprey to take the 34-10 lead. In the fourth quarter defense would be the name of the game as there would be no scoring and the Nighthawks would get the 34-10 lead to finish the regular season at 8-0 while the Red Storm finish at 3-4. The playoffs will get under way next weekend with the Peru Nighthawks getting a bye and will play the winner of Beekmantown and Plattsburgh for the CVAC Class B title the following weekend. While the Red Storm will host the 2-5 Ausable Valley Patriots in the CVAC Class C Semifinals with the winner getting #21 Saranac Chiefs in the CVAC Class C Championship. Gallery

It would be the last week of the regular season in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and it would be a match up of one win teams as the Ausable Valley Patriots would host the Plattsburgh Hornets on hall of fame night for the Patriots. It would be a defensive game as both teams were fighting for field possession advantage and there would be no scoring in the first quarter. The Hornets would break the scoreless game four minutes into the second quarter on a 33 yard run by Trenton Griffiths for the 6-0 Hornets lead and thats where the game would end the first half at. Although the Patriots would come out in the third quarter hunger and they would get on the board just over half way through the third quarter on a 16 yard run by Dylan Bombard and take the 7-6 lead. That is where the same would stay till the closing stages of the 4th quarter when the Patriots and Dylan Bombard would strike again on a 1 yard run to extend the lead to 14-6 and from there the defense would hold strong and secure the Patriots win and go to 3-5 on the season while the Hornets fall to 1-7. With the win the Patriots will head into there CVAC Class C Semifinals game next week looking to upset the Saranac Lake Red Storm with the right to go to the Class C Finals on the line. While the Plattsburgh Hornets will head to Beekmantown and take on the Eagles in the CVAC Class B Semifinals with the right to take on the Peru Nighthawks in the finals on the line. Gallery
