The Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team celebrates the 2020 NEWHL championship. The Plattsburgh State Women's hockey team won its third Northeast Women's Hockey League title, and eighth consecutive conference championship overall, with a 6-1 victory over SUNY Oswego Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The victory earned the Cardinals an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III championship tournament, which was subsequently canceled as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The NEWHL Championship game began well for the visiting Lakers, who found themselves on the powerplay on six-second into the contest when senior defenseman Hannah Kirly was called for interference. While Oswego was unable to capitalize on that opportunity, the visitors took the lead at the 7:52 mark with a goal from Pliomena Teggart, assisted by Kate Rendazzo and NEWHL Rookie of the Year Megan Teachout. The Cardinals tied the contest at 10:23 when a loose puck deflected out to the top of the crease and Kaitlin Drew-Mead picked it up and put it under the pad of goaltender Rachel Farmer. Plattsburgh took the lead for good five minutes later, as Drew-Mead carried the puck into the zone and stretched around the defense to get a soft shot on Farmer, giving Sara Krauseneck the rebound opportunity for her 19th goal of the season. The home team went into the first intermission up 2-1, with a healthy 22-8 advantage in shots on goal. The defending national champions got the insurance goal at 7:06 of the second period on the powerplay, when Nicole Unsworth's shot from the left faceoff circle found the back of the net, prompting a leaping celebration from defenseman Emma Killeen. Later in the period, Kiraly found herself down low in the crease to poke at a rebound in front of Farmer and extend the Cardinals' lead to 4-1. Plattsburgh's Taylor Whitney and Annie Katonka both scored in the third period for the final tally of 6-1. Plattsburgh goaltender Ashley Davis made 20 saves in the win, while Farmer stopped 49 of the 55 shots she faced between the pipes for Oswego. With the win and subsequent cancellation of the NCAA tournament, the Cardinals finished their season with a final record of 26-1 and an 18-game winning streak. Seniors Kiraly, Sarah Wolf, and Jen Manning denied an opportunity to play for their third national title, finished with a career record of 107-8-3. Gallery

SLP goaltender Anders Stanton stonewalls a rebound attempt by Queensbury senior Brendan Duffy in the second period of the NYSPHSAA boys’ ice hockey regional Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Section VII Champion Saranac Lake/Lake Placid boys’ hockey team’s inaugural season ended Saturday with a 6-4 loss to Queensbury in the NYSPHSAA Regionals at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. SLP, playing without leading goalscorer Dylan Amell for the game, opened the scoring just 3:55 into the game with a goal from junior forward Rhett Darrah, only to see junior Devon Salone equalize for the visitors at the 11:13 mark of the first period. Queensbury nearly gained the lead in the final minute of the opening frame, when senior forward Brendan Duffy danced his way through the SLP defense for a close-range shot, forcing a save from goaltender Anders Stanton. The second period was an active one for goalscorers, with five goals in the period. Less than a minute after the intermission, Darrah netted his second of the game off the rebound to go-ahead 2-1, but that lead lasted a little more than a minute before senior defenseman Josh DeMattos again tied the score for Queensbury. SLP nudged in front again at the 5:15 mark when senior Camden Reilley found twine, and the host team reached the midpoint of the game having never trailed on the scoreboard. Queensbury’s freshman defenseman Jared Chamberlain worked his way into the low slot before beating Stanton at the 9:45 mark of the second period, again tying the game. That was when the momentum shifted. DeMattos got his second tally of the contest off a defensive turnover by SLP, giving Queensbury its first lead of the day. SLP senior Hunter Wilmot had a golden opportunity to answer that in the dying moments of the second period when he got his stick to bouncing puck inches above the goal line in front of an open net with Queensbury goaltender Blake Powers well out of the crease. Disrupted by DeMattos, Wilmot couldn’t find the leverage to direct the puck, and it sailed past the far post. Queensbury extended their lead to three goals in the third, with tallies from Paul Wright and Salone. Sophomore defenseman Carter Sturgeon beat Powers with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line at 13:27, but Queensbury held on for the 6-4 victory to advance to the NYSPHSAA Semifinals at Buffalo’s Harborcenter. Powers made 19 saves in the win, while Stanton stopped 40 shots in net for SLP. Gallery

Saranac Lake/Lake Placid's Andres Stanton (1) finds a use for the head as he saves the puck with it off the shot from Saranac's Austin Carpenter (6). It would be time for the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Championship and it would be a battle of the Saranac's as it would be the #1 Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers and the #3 Saranac Chiefs battling for the right to be crowned champions and head to the New York State Tournament. The game would start well for the upset-minded Chiefs as they would get the opening goal of the game from Austin Carpenter at the 7:27 mark of the first period for the 1-0 Chiefs and they would hold that through the period. Although when the second period came the Lakers would waste little time tying the game up at the 45 seconds mark on the Rhett Darrah goal. Then in a two-minute span in the 5th and 7th minute Tyler Hinckley would score to give the Lakers the 3-1 lead. Then in the last 1:10 of the second, the Lakers would strike again for the 4-1 lead on the Bailey Bartholomew goal. Then in the third period, the Lakers would put the game away at the 6:01 mark of the period on the second Rhett Darrah goal this time on the shorthand. In the winning effort, the Lakers go to 15-6-1 on the season as Andres Stanton would make 15 saves and have a date with the Queensbury Spartans in the New York State Division 2 Quarterfinals. Although the season would come to end the Chiefs have nothing to hang there heads on as Eric Frechette would make 55 saves as they end there season at 13-9. Gallery

Plattsburgh State captain Madison Walker cuts back to try to shake off Cortland’s Kirsten MacDowell in the offensive zone during the NEWHL Semifinal Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The No. 1 Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team notched another win Saturday, taking down SUNY Cortland 3-0 in the NEWHL semifinals at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The afternoon started slowly for the Cardinals’ offense, as the defending national champions were held off the scoreboard through 20 minutes of play for the first time since Jan. 11, ending a streak of 10 games. The defense held firm, though, as goaltender Ashley Davis turned away all six shots she faced. Plattsburgh State broke the deadlock at the 7:58 mark of the second period, as Abby Brush sent home a third rebound chance in a chaotic sequence in the Cortland crease to score her 12th goal of the season. While that was the only scoring of the middle frame, the Cardinals looked to capitalize on that momentum heading into the third period to ensure victory. That insurance came on the powerplay when Annie Katonka was in front to capitalize on the rebound from Erin McArdle’s shot from the left faceoff circle. With the Cardinals in front 2-0, the victory was all but certain after defenseman Sierra Benjamin sent a relatively soft shot from a low angle. Benjamin and her teammates crashed the net to pick up a rebound, but Benjamin’s shot had deflected off the pads of goaltender Chelsea Allain and crossed the line. The 3-0 victory improved Plattsburgh State’s all-time record against Cortland to 47-0-0, a streak dating back to December 2001, and brought this season’s record to 25-1-0. After winning the semifinal, the Cardinals will host the Lakers of SUNY Oswego in the NEWHL Championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. Gallery

Saranac/Peru forward Zack O’Connell (12) tracks behind Northeastern Clinton’s Samuel Bulson (19) at mid-ice in a Section VII semifinal contest at the Rouses Point Civic Center. The crowd at the Rouses Point Civic Center was treated to plenty of bonus hockey Thursday night, as it took two overtime periods for Saranac to take down Northeastern Clinton by a final score of 5-4. The Chiefs, 6-2 winners against the same opposition one week earlier, found themselves in a hole early, after the Cougars took a 2-0 lead by the 4:21 mark off goals from Chase Letourneau and Lucas Bedard. It took less than a minute for Saranac to cut that deficit in half. Austin Carpenter tapped in a feed from linemate Hayden Buckley to get the visiting team on the board, scoring the third goal of the game at only the 5:04 mark of the first period. After that flurry of goals, the teams had to wait for the next goal, which didn’t come until 9:50 into the second period. The Cougars regained their two-point lead on a powerplay goal from Letourneau for the only tally of the second period. With the home team leading shots on goal 23-10 going into the final period of regulation, momentum began to shift in the latter half of the third. The Chiefs got themselves within reach at the 8:49 mark of the period when Nikalas Hamel sent home a slapshot from the high point to beat goaltender Ethan Garrand. Just 12 seconds after the goal, things looked grim against for Saranac, as starting defenseman Nolan Knight was sent to the box for roughing. However, it was the chiefs who would enjoy the fruits of the special-teams action. Breaking out of the defensive zone, Buckley made a good move to dodge a check at the blue line by Northeastern Clinton defenseman Zach Miller, creating a two-on-one in the offensive zone. Buckley made a nice cross-ice pass to Hamel, who sent home a shorthanded goal to tie the game with 4:39 left in regulation. With the score tied, Saranac continued to press offensively, and it paid off inside two minutes to go. Zack O’Connell carried the puck into the zone along the boards, cutting in toward goal once he’d beaten his man. He sent a wrist shot high to take the late lead. The Chiefs could have sealed victory late in regulation, but a long-range shot at the empty net in the final minute missed, crossing the line inches outside of the post. The Cougars made that miss count, as Jack Bulson sent a slapshot from the point past goaltender Erick Frechette to tie the game with 36 seconds on the clock. Fatigue began to show for both sides in the overtime period, and shots on net became much more scarce. Saranac’s coaching staff leaned heavily on its top line of O’Connell, Carpenter, and Buckley, who played shifts several minutes long. They kept the Cougars in their own end, though, and continued to press. While one overtime was not enough to settle the contest, it didn’t take long in the second extra period for the winning goal to come. The Chiefs crashed the net, with several players hunting for a rebound after a hard shot on Garrand’s goal, and O’Connell picked up the loose puck to end the game. Garrand made 27 saves in the lengthy game, while Frechette made 31 stops in net for the win. With the victory, Saranac advanced to Tuesday’s Section VII Championship against Saranac Lake/Lake Placid at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Gallery

Plattsburgh's Drew Knowles and Beekmantown's Alex Brienza (18) battle for the loose puck in the offensive face off circle. Plattsburgh High School and Beekmantown skated to a 0-0 tie amid drama and controversy in the Hannah's Hope game at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Saturday, Feb. 15. Beekmantown cleared the bench with 12 seconds left in the overtime period, swarming forward Collin Latinville in celebration of an apparent game-winning goal. The Eagles briefly celebrated and then lined up for post-game handshakes before the officials finished discussing the play and waving off the goal. The ruling was that Plattsburgh goaltender John Dublanyk was interfered with by incidental contact from Luke Moser. After protests from Beekmantown players and coaches, play resumed and the final 12 seconds passed without a goal. It was the second disallowed goal of the night, as the Hornets thought Brandt Clarke had scored a goal in the second half of the third period to take the 1-0 lead, but the official blew the play dead and ruled the puck had not crossed the line. That incident came only moments after Beekmantown's best scoring chance of the game, an odd-man rush that saw Dalton Kane's shot hit the post. In the physical game that accompanied a fundraiser for Hannah's Hope Fund, which raised more than $2,000, Beekmantown's Ryan Hansen made 27 saves while Dublanyk stopped all 50 shots sent his way. The Section VII champion Plattsburgh High School Lady Hornets saw their season come to an end Saturday with a 7-0 loss to Section VI champion Williamsville in the NYSPHSAA Regional Championship Semifinal on the 1980 Rink at Lake Placid’s Herb Brooks Arena. Squaring up against the senior-laden defending NYSPHSAA Regional champion, Plattsburgh faced an uphill battle from the opening faceoff. It didn’t take long for the opening score, as Williamsville’s Ellie Schau lost her footing while driving to the net, sliding into the pads of Hornets goaltender Ava Julian. The official ruled there was no goaltender interference and awarded a goal to junior Elizabeth Jackson at 1:18 of the first period. The opening frame only became more difficult for Plattsburgh, as Williamsville largely dominated possession and added to their tally. Senior Emma Roland forced a turnover behind Julian’s net and carried the puck around front herself to score from the right faceoff circle at 6:13, before scoring another unassisted goal at 8:47 with a deke in front to put the puck around Julian’s pad. First-period scoring was capped off at 12:21 when Claire O’Donnell poked at a bouncing puck at the back door to hit a wide-open net after a chaotic scene in the Hornets’ crease. The second period saw Plattsburgh generate more offense, getting seven shots to Williamsville goaltender Mia Wendell, but could not find the back of the net. Meanwhile, Williamsville added goals from Jenna Cavalieri and Lindsey Powers to extend their lead to 6-0 after two periods. Having clearly lost the game, the Hornets continued to skate hard in the third period anyway, to the delight of head coach Trevor Cameron. The final frame saw only one goal, as Emma Roland sent home a feed from Erin Roland to complete her hat trick. Plattsburgh killed all four of Williamsville’s power-play opportunities in the game, while Julian made 21 saves in the loss. In the Williamsville net, the game ended with a 14-save shutout for Wendell. Gallery

Clinton Warriors Vs Salmon River Shamrocks - NYSPHSAA Final Four Girl's Hockey - February 8th 2020

Clinton goalscorer Abby Kurdziolek wins a battle along the boards with Salmon River captain Rylee Garrow. The undefeated Section X girls hockey champion, Salmon River, faced off against a worthy opponent Saturday on the 1980 Olympic Rink at Lake Placid’s Herb Brooks Arena. In a tight NYSPHSAA Regional Semifinal contest, the Lady Warriors of Clinton Central knocked off the Shamrocks in a 1-0 upset. Salmon River entered the contest with a 20-0-2 record but faced the task of taking down the team that gave them one of those two ties, a 1-1 deadlock in December. Despite the narrow result, Clinton appeared in control for large portions of the contest, keeping the Shamrocks pinned in their own zone for long stretches and restricting the Section X Champions to only 1 shot in the first period. That shot did not come until the final minute of the opening frame. When Salmon River did get offensive possession, their defensemen were repeatedly beaten at the blue line by fast-skating forwards chipping the puck to themselves along the boards. The first significant scoring opportunity for either team came on the powerplay for the Warriors, as a shot from the high slot was tipped in from of Shamrocks goaltender Carli Cartier, but the puck sailed over the crossbar and the teams entered intermission knotted at 0. Clinton took the lead at the 4:45 mark of the second period on a similar play, as sophomore defenseman Abby Kurdziolek tipped in a shot from up high by freshman forward Drew Kopek. Just over a minute later, the Section III champions celebrated a second goal before the officials ruled the net had been dislodged. Salmon River started to generate more offensive pressure in the latter stages of the second frame, but went into the third period facing a 1-0 deficit, the Warriors led shots 15-6. The Shamrocks struggled against the Clinton defense in the final period, getting only three shots on goal. Salmon River’s best scoring chance of the game came midway through the third when Hannah Johnston and Jaryn Chubb appeared to have a clean break up the ice, only to be chased down by the defense and fail to beat goaltender Hailey Millington. The dueling senior goaltenders kept the game close throughout, as Cartier’s 18 saves on 19 shots were bested by Millington’s nine-save shutout. With the win, the Warriors advanced to the NYSPHSAA Regional Championship against defending champion Williamsville. Gallery

Franklin Academy’s Olivia Cook scores on the breakaway to score the eventual game-winner over Beekmantown. The Huskies defeated the Eagles 3-2 in the sectional semifinal Wednesday at the Scotts’ Rink in Chazy. History was made Wednesday night at the Scotts’ Memorial Rink in Chazy, as the Franklin Academy girls’ hockey team earned an upset victory over Beekmantown in the Section 7 Semifinals. The Huskies’ 3-2 win on the road was the first playoff triumph in program history. In a back-and-forth first period that saw the road team edge the hosts in shots on goal 8-6, Franklin Academy scored the only tally in the final moments of the period when Vail St. Hilaire put home a feed from her sister Whitney. The Eagles found themselves in an ever-deeper hole early in the second period, after Huskies defenseman Courtney Bouyea hit the upper corner with a wrist shot from the high slot off a pass from Olivia Cook. Beekmantown’s leading goal-scorer, senior Bailey Carter, got the home team on the board at the 9:30 mark of the second, but Cook restored Franklin Academy’s two-goal lead 91 seconds later on the breakaway. The Eagles appeared to have scored another goal shortly before the end of the second period, by the referee cut the celebration short after ruling that the net had been dislodged. Carter scored the only goal of the third period, collecting a cross-ice pass from Brooke Ruest on the power play and send it home from the right half board to beat Huskies goaltender Gina Norcross. An aggressive forecheck late in the game by Franklin Academy stifled the Eagles’ ability to pull goaltender Brianne Knight until the final 30 seconds, and the Huskies held on for the 3-2 win. Norcross made 23 saves in the win, while Knight made 17. With the win, Franklin Academy advanced to Monday’s Section 7 Final against Plattsburgh High School. Gallery

Plattsburgh State's defenseman Emma Killeen (28) unleashes a shot from the right faceoff circle toward Middlebury goaltender Lin Han.The Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team avenged its only loss so far this season with a 4-1 victory over the Middlebury Panthers Tuesday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The No. 1 Cardinals entered the contest on a nine-game winning streak since losing in the final of the Panther/Cardinal Classic Dec. 1, while the No. 2 Panthers boasted an undefeated 10-0-2 record. Plattsburgh had to weather a storm early on, as Middlebury maintained offensive zone possession for nearly all of the first eight minutes of the game. A strong defensive performance by the team, including several blocked shots, meant that this territorial advantage resulted in only one shot on goal for the Panthers. Momentum swung in favor of the Cardinals at the 8:01 mark, when Middlebury defenseman Anna Zumwinkle was called for body checking. Reigning NEWHL player of the week Sara Krauseneck took advantage, putting a shot from just above the goal line behind the far post. Plattsburgh scored the eventual game-winner in the final minute of the first period when Madison Walker won the quick battle for a rebound in the slot and passed it to a wide-open Nicole Unsworth, putting Middlebury goaltender Lin Han out of position and unable to make another save. The only goal of the second period came at the 18:02 mark after Han made a spectacular shoulder save on a goal-bound shot from the high slot by Kaitlin Drew-Mead. As the Middlebury defense scrambled to clear the rebound, the puck found its way to Drew-Mead. She passed it to Walker, who hit the top glove-side corner with a quick wrist shot. A penalty in the dying seconds of the second period gave Middlebury a powerplay entering the final frame, and Eva Hendrickson scored her first of the season to get the Panthers on the board, but the Cardinals’ advantage was too much. Unsworth capped off the night with an unassisted empty-netter after forcing the turnover at the blue line and skating the puck up the ice herself. Han made 30 saves in the losing effort, while Plattsburgh’s Ashley Davis stopped 21 of the 22 shots she faced on the evening. Gallery

Beekmantown’s lead doubled about four minutes later, as Ruest returned the favor by assisting on Carter’s goal before Sage McGinley-Smith scored unassisted to put Hanover on the board. The second period saw the Marauders apply sustained offensive pressure the first several minutes, but it was the Lady Eagles who took the puck up the ice on a counterattack for a quick score. A pass from Tetreault sprung Leah Coulombe loose, and Coulombe did not miss. Brooke Ruest largely put the game to rest early in the third period, tapping in a goal at the back door off assists from Janna Ruest and Sophia King. Potsdam's skater and Plattsburgh's Taylor Heywood (3) battle for the loose puck at center ice. The Plattsburgh High School girls’ hockey team suffered a 3-2 non-conference loss at home Jan. 3 against Potsdam. The game began well for the Lady Hornets, who built a 2-0 lead in the first period off goals from Amanda Vaughn and Avery Holland. The remainder of the game was an effort to maintain that lead, unsuccessfully. The Sandstoners got on the board at the 11-minute mark of the second period, as the Hornets turned the puck over at the offensive blue line, and two Plattsburgh defensemen collided with one another to send Potsdam freshman Kennedy Emerson on a breakaway. That would be the theme of the third period, as Potsdam junior Karley Green beat Plattsburgh goaltender Ava Julian on a breakaway of her own at the 10:03 mark to tie the contest. With the game seemingly destined for overtime, the Sandstoners showed they had other ideas. A breakout pass from Green found Emerson, who blew past the Hornets’ defense in the neutral zone and deked around Julian in the crease to tap the puck in on the backhand. With Emerson’s second tally coming with only 17 seconds remaining, the Lady Hornets were unable to overcome the deficit and lost a game they had led 2-0 at the halfway mark. Gallery
