NYSPHSAA Division II Boy's Hockey Regional Finals: #10 Saranac Spartans Vs #6 Queensbury Spartans March 7th, 2025

Queenbury's Egan Breault (31) with the diving stop on Saranac's Landon Giroux (17) as he looked to break up the shutout. It would be the quarterfinals of the New York State Boys' Hockey Division II Tournament, and it would see #6 Queensbury Spartans and #10 Saranac Spartans from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena, with the winner going to the Final Four in Buffalo, NY, next weekend. The Queensbury Spartans would get the game's opening goal in the eighth minute of the first period when Oliver Coughlin would score, which would be the only scoring of the period. When we returned for the second period, Queensbury came out on fire as they scored three goals in the first five minutes from Cameron Porter (twice) and Ethan Kelsey to give the 4-0 lead after the second period. Queensbury would keep it going and make it 5-0 at the 8:32 mark of the third period when Ethan Kelsey would complete his hat trick. Queenbury would keep it coming and extend their lead to 6-0 at 11:11, when Cameron Porter would also score to complete a hat trick on the night. Then, in the game's closing minutes, Queensbury would get one more from Ollie Coughlan, and they secured the 7-0 victory. In the winning effort, the Queensbury Spartans will advance to the final four of the New York State Tournament, where they will get the winner of Rye and Ogdensburg. The Saranac Spartans would open the goal scoring as Ryan Campbell would get the goal three minutes in and take the 1-0 lead. Queensbury would return and get the game-tying goal just 2 minutes later, thanks to Ethan Kelsey, and tie the game at one. Then, just 93 seconds later, Ethan Kelsey would score again and give the home Spartans the 2-1 lead, and that's where the first period would end. When the teams returned for the second period, the Saranac Spartans would waste little time getting the equalizer as Ryan Campbell would get his second goal, and the game would be tied at two. The game would stay there til the 7:23 mark of the period when the Queensbury Spartans would answer again with two goals in 90 seconds and take the 4-2 lead on goals from Sean Culligan and Rhys Roberts, and that's how the second period would end. When the teams returned for the third period, the Queensbury Spartans would extend their lead to 5-2 just 1:01 into the period. The Saranac Spartans would try to make it interesting down the stretch as Ryan Campell would score at the 11:42 mark of the period to complete his hat trick on the night and make it a 5-3 game. From there, the Queensbury defense would clamp down as they got the win and went to 11-4-1 in the season. Queensbury's shooter with the quick flick that would beat Saranac's Shawn McLane on the glove side for the goal as Queensbury got the 6-5 win. The Saranac Spartans would travel down to Section II Friday night and play the #6 Queensbury Spartans on the pink rink night for cancer awareness in the battle of Spartans. The Saranac Spartans would wear their new black jerseys for cancer awareness while Queensbury would wear pink with a family member's name on the back that was touched by cancer in front of a packed house. The Queensbury Spartans would have a 3-1 lead after the opening 17 minutes while the lone Saranac goal came from Evan Patrie. In the second period, each team would get a pair of goals to make it a 4-2 game after the second 17 minutes. In the third period, both teams would bring the offense as there would be a combined 5 goals in the period but the Queensbury Spartans powerplay would just be too much as they get a couple on the powerplay to secure the 6-5 win. The biggest one would be right after Saranac had made it 5-4 with about six minutes left in the game. However, the Queensbury Spartans would on for the win as Eagn Breault would make 34 saves as they went to 13-3 on the season. In the losing effort, Shawn McLane would make 23 saves in a great effort as Saranac falls to 8-7-1 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow as they play another Section II team in the Saratoga Springs Blue Streaks. It would be a nonleague game inside the top 15 in the state New York State Boy's Hockey Division 2 as the #12 Saranac Chiefs would travel down to section 2 and take on the #9 Queensbury Spartans in what might be a new york state region in the state tournament in a few weeks. The teams would be very evenly matched through the first period and there would be no scoring in the first period. It would take till the 6:14 mark of the second period when Keegan Lozier would score to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. The game would remain there til the 9:43 mark of the period when the Spartans would score again this time from Nick Ogden to give the 2-0 lead. Then with just over five minutes left in the period, the Spartans would take control of the game on the Tanner Freeman goal as the score would go to 3-0. The Chiefs would keep fighting and get on the board just three minutes into the third period on the Evan Patrie goal to keep the game alive at 3-1. The game would stay there until the final five minutes when Chiefs' Landin Duprey would get saddled with a five-minute boarding call. On the issuing powerplay, the Spartans would light the lamp three times from Ethan Kelsey Michael Deutsch, and Tyler Dufour and take the 6-1 victory. In the losing effort, the Chiefs fall to 10-4-3 on the season and will play the Saratoga Blue Streaks tomorrow while the Queensbury Spartans will go to 12-3 and will be back in action tomorrow against Bethlem.
