Plattsburgh State's Travis Cox (35) battles underneath the basket for the score as part of a game-high 31 point night. The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team saw its playoff chances get much slimmer Friday, with a home-court loss to New Paltz at Memorial Hall. The Hawks, who sit in the last place in the SUNYAC, recorded a 73-68 win over the Cardinals that left the home team needing a win over second-seeded Oneonta to qualify for the postseason. The host team began the game well, taking a 4-0 lead early on and holding keeping ahead until after the midpoint of the first half. New Paltz battled back, though, and went into halftime with a 40-30 lead. Plattsburgh kept the Hawks from going on any notable runs in the second half, but the deficit slowly grew as high as 16 with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Cardinals then went on a run to narrow the margin. The Cardinals made it a one-possession game when junior Travis Cox scored a layup and converted on a free-throw to bring the deficit to three points in the final minute of the game. A missed three-point shot by New Paltz's Scott Reisert saw a defensive rebound by Plattsburgh's Matt Berhnhard, who drove up the court and ultimately set up senior Nick DeAngelis for a potential game-tying three with 16 seconds remaining. The shot missed, and Reisert picked up the rebound to end the threat. Cox's 31 points led the Cardinals, with only DeAngelis getting to double-digits, at 11. DeAngelis led with 8 rebounds, while three of his teammates each recorded 7. Gallery

It would be the last weekend of the regular season and the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the first of a pair of games against the Morrisville State Mustangs as they fight for there playoff lives. It would not start off good for the Cardinals though as the visiting Mustangs would strike first just 19 seconds into the game on a goal by James Boisvert for the one 1-0. Although the Cardinals would answer back with a pair of goals from Matt Araujo and Hunter Alden and the 2-1 lead into the intermission. In the second period though the teams would combine for 5 goals as the Cardinals would take a 6-2 lead with goals from Mike Falangana, Adam Tretowicz (twice) and Joe Drabin. In the third period, the Cardinals would add to more goals from Hunter Alden (second of the night) and Brendan Young as they cruise to the 8-2 win. In the winning effort, Johnny Poreda would make 26 saves as the Cardinals go to 8-13-2 on the season and keep the playoffs alive. They are right back at it tomorrow night against the same Morrisville State Mustangs as they battle for the playoffs. Gallery

Plattsburgh State's Taylor Durnin (10) keeps control of the ball and the play from the knee in a battle of keep away. The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team had a tough night on the court against a SUNYAC-leading foe from New Paltz. In a game in which they never held a lead, the Cardinals couldn't hold back the New Paltz offense and lost by a final score of 73-45 at Memorial Hall. After the Hawks opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Marion Dietz, Plattsburgh's Taylor Durnin equalized nearly two minutes later in the low-scoring first quarter for both teams. The teams exchanged field goals just after the midpoint of the quarter, but 5-5 would be the last time the game was tied. New Paltz controlled the scoreboard from then on. Trailing by seven at the halftime buzzer, the Cardinals saw things turn from bad to worse in the third period. Two separate six-point runs by the Hawks, each lasting more than three minutes, allowed the visitors to build a commanding lead. The final 28-point margin was the result of a fourth-quarter even more dominant than the third for New Paltz, who outscored the host team 23-11 in the final frame. Individually, a balanced offense for the Hawks saw three different players hit double-digit points, with three more having 8 or 9, while Durnin's 10-point night was the only double-digit performance for the Cardinals. It would be a battle of national powers as the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #4 Elmira Soaring Eagles at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena as part of the senior night for the Cardinals. The game would start off good for the home Cardinals as they would take the 1-0 lead 5:48 into the first period when Sara Wolfe would light the lamp. The game would stay there the ten-minute mark of the period when the Cardinals would strike again once again from Sara Wolfe for her second of the night to make it 2-0 Cardinals. The Soaring Eagles would do there best to keep the game close as they would go through the whole second period without a goal. In the third period about halfway through the back would break and the Cardinals would score from Taylor Whitney for the 3-0 lead and hold one for the win. In the winning effort, the Cardinals would go to 22-1 on the season as Ashley Davis would make 22 stops on the night. Gallery

It would be a SUNYAC Men's basketball affair at Memorial Hall as the Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the Buffalo State Bengals in front of 125 fans. It would be a close game throughout the first half but the Bengals would be able to pull away and take a 49-44 lead at the break. When the teams came back for the second half the Cardinals would do there best to keep the game close but the Bengals would be just too much as they win the second half 40-38 as the Cardinals would fall short at 89-82. In the losing effort, Erik Salo would lead the way for the Cardinals with 25 points as they fall to 8-13 on the season. Next up for the Cardinals would be a road trip next weekend to Oswego and Cortland. Gallery.
