Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Champions Challenge Girl's Basketball: #11 Saranac Spartans Vs #12 Peru Nighthawks March 5th 2025

After over a 15 year hituas it would be the return of the Section VII Champions and on the first night it would be the girl's taking center stage and the second game of the day would see a battle inside the top 15 as it would be the #11 Saranac Spartans from Class B taking on #12 Peru Nighthawks from Class A. The Spartans would start by taking control of the game in the first quarter as they would have a 13-5 lead on the Nighthawks after the first eight minutes. The second quarter would be more evenly matched as the Nighthawks would win slightly with a 14-13 quarter, but the Spartans would have the 26-19 lead at the break. When the teams returned for the second half, the Spartans found their groove again, had a 12-8 quarter, and took the 38-27 lead into the final stanza. In the fourth and final quarter, the Spartans would put the closing marks on the game with a 12-7 quarter and secure the 50-34 victory. In the winning effort for the Spartans, Breanna Ducatte would lead the way with 18 points as they go to 16-3 on the season, enter the New York State tournament, and play the Section II champion on March 12th. As for the Peru Nighthawks, they will fall to 17-4 on the season as Reese Duprey would lead the way with 18, and they are also headed to the New York State tournament and will play the winner from Section II. It would be the start of Section VII Championship weekend from the Clinton Community College, and it would start with the Class A Girls' Championship and see #1 Peru Nighthawks and the #2 Beekmantown Eagles. It would be a close game at the start as the Nighhthawks would have the 10-7 lead after the first quarter. The game would still be tight in the second quarter as it would be an 11-8 quarter for the Nighthawks, and they would take the 21-15 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter, they would still be tight, but the Nighthawks would have the slight edge at 14-12 and take the 35-27 lead into the final quarter. In that fourth quarter, the Nighhawks would have their best quarter of the night as they would have a 17-11 quarter to secure the 52-38 victory. In the wining effort for the Nighthawks, they will advance to the New York State Class A Tournament and take on the winner of Section 2 as Reese Duprey would lead theway with 24 points. It would be the final game on the opening day of the Clinton Community College Holiday Classic and would pit the Peru Nighthawks and Saranac Spartans in girls' basketball action. The Spartans would take control of the game early on and have the 17-7 lead after the opening quarter. In the second quarter, the teams would play a little more evenly as the Nighthawks would find their defense, and it would be a 9-8 quarter in favor of the Nighthawks, but the Spartans would have the 25-16 lead at the intermission. When the teams return for the third quarter, it will be another evenly contested eight minutes as the Spartans have a 12-9 quarter and take the 37-25 lead into the fourth. In that fourth quarter, it would be another win for the Spartans as they would have an 11-8 quarter and secure the 48-33 victory. In the winning effort for the Spartans, they will go to 6-1 on the season and take on the Beekmantown Eagles on the second day as they go for the title. The Spartans would take control of the game early on and have the 17-7 lead after the game's opening quarter. In the second quarter, the teams would play a little more evenly as the Nighthawks would find their defense, and it would be a 9-8 quarter in favor of the Nighthawks, but the Spartans would have the 25-16 lead at the intermission. When the teams return for the third quarter, it will be another evenly contested eight minutes as the Spartans have a 12-9 quarter and take the 37-25 lead into the fourth. In that fourth quarter, it would be another win for the Spartans as they would have an 11-8 quarter and secure the 48-33 victory. When the teams returned for the third quarter, they played an even third quarter, with the Nighthawks winning the quarter 11-10 and taking the 49-36. In the fourth quarter, the Hornets would do their best to get back in the game with a shutdown defense, and they would win the quarter 10-2, but it would not be enough on this night as the Nighthawks would get the 51-46 win and the Nighthawks would go to 3-0 on the season while the Hornets fall to 0-1 on the season. In the second quarter, it would be the complete opposite as the Eagles would settle and their offense would come as they would win the quarter 10-3 and have a slim 14-13 lead at the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter the teams would play very evenly as the game would be tied at 26 as they head into the fourth quarter. In that fourth quarter the Eagles would have a 16-10 quarter as there would be over a third of the points scored in just that quarter along the Eagles would get the come-from-behind victory at 42-36.
