The Arizona State Sun Devils have been crowned the inaugural Adirondack Winter Invitational champions in a shootout win over the Cornell Big Red. It would be the championship of the first ever Adirondack Winter Invitational and it would pit a pair of top 20 teams in the country to battle it out at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY with 3,800 in attendance the #13 Arizona State Sun Devils would face off against the #17 Cornell Big Red. It would take till there were five minutes left in the opening period before we had our first goal from Cornell's Gabriel Seger on the powerplay for the 1-0 Big Red lead. Then in the second period, just 4:55 into the period the Big Red would take the 2-0 lead on the George Fegaras would score for the Big Red and give them a 2-0 lead. However, the Sun Devils would answer right back 17 seconds later to keep it a one-goal game at 2-1 on the Jackson Nieermayer goal. The game would stay there till the 43-second mark of the third period when the Sun Devils would tie the game up on the powerplay with the goal from Matthew Kopperud. That would be all on this night though as the goalies would stand tall between the pipes for the rest of the way there would be scoring in the rest of the third period and the five-minute overtime so the game goes in the books as a tie. However, because of the Adirondack Winter Invitational, the teams would go to the shootout and there the Arizona State Sun Devils would win the first-ever tournament 1-0 in the shootout. Arizona State's Tj Semptimphelter would make 25 saves while Cornell's Ian Shane would 18 in this evenly matched game now will just wait and see if the Arizona State Sun Devils will get the invite back to see if they can defend their title.
