PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh Hornets remained unbeaten on the season Thursday night, rallying from an early setback to earn a 3-1 victory over the Ausable Valley Patriots in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls volleyball action. The Patriots entered the match at 1-2 and were determined to hand the Hornets their first loss of the season. Ausable Valley came out strong in a tightly contested opening set that featured several lead changes. Late in the set, the Patriots appeared to take control, building a 23-18 advantage. Plattsburgh refused to go away, however, mounting a comeback to tie the score and force extra points. Despite the Hornets' rally, the Patriots held on for a dramatic 27-25 victory and took a 1-0 lead in the match. After dropping the opening set, Plattsburgh responded convincingly. The Hornets came out energized in the second set and quickly established control behind strong serving and consistent play on both sides of the net. Plattsburgh cruised to a 25-14 victory to even the match at one set apiece. The Hornets kept the momentum in the third set. Ausable Valley struggled to slow down the Plattsburgh attack as the Hornets dominated from start to finish, pulling away for a commanding 25-10 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. Facing elimination, the Patriots looked to extend the contest in the fourth set, but the Hornets continued their strong play. Plattsburgh maintained the pressure throughout the set and closed out the match with a 25-15 victory, securing the 3-1 win in just over 90 minutes. With the victory, Plattsburgh improved to 4-0 on the season and will return to the court on Sept. 22 against the Northern Adirondack Bobcats. Ausable Valley dropped to 2-2 and will travel to Saranac on Sept. 21, looking to move back above .500. Gallery

Plattsburgh's Bailey Hewson (10) goes up and around Ausable Valley's (12) for the score on a 47-42 loss to Ausable Valley. It would be another night of Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls's Basketball action, this time from the Plattsburgh High School, and it would see the Hornets tipping off against the Ausable Valley Patriots. The game would be tight as both teams found the basket at a good clip and tied at 12 after the first quarter. Both teams would keep up their good scoring in the second quarter, but the Hornets would be a little better in the quarter at 13-11 and take the 25-23 lead into the break. When the teams would return for the third quarter, the defense would step up for the Patriots, and they would have a 10-6 quarter and take the 33-31 lead into the final quarter. In that final quarter, the offenses on both sides would return, but the Patriots would be better on this day with a 14-11 quarter to seal the 47-42 victory. Gallery

Moriah's Cooper Allen (4) with the tough catch in traffic that gets them inside the 5-yard line on the drive. It would be the section vii class D championship football game from the Beekmantown High School, and it would feature the #1 Moriah Vikings and the #2 Ausable Valley Patriots, with the winner getting a spot in the NYSPHSAA Class D Tournament quarterfinals on November 23rd. The game's opening score would be one rare variety as the Vikings would get a safety with five minutes left in the quarter and take the 2-0 lead. Then, with 4 minutes left in the quarter, we would have our first touchdown as they would hit Chase McGiness for the touchdown and take the 10-0 lead. The Patriots would come back and get on the board just 36 seconds into the second quarter on the 22-yard run by John Fletcher to make it a 10-6 game. The Vikings would answer right back at the 2:35 mark of the quarter on a 4-yard strike to Cooper Allen, and they would regain their double-digit lead at 17-6. The Patriots would not let that get them down as they would answer right back 90 seconds later on the Hayden Bombard 15-yard strike and be back within one score at 18-14. The Vikings would answer back with a 6-yard run by Jacob Mascarenas and take the 24-14 lead into the locker room. When the teams return for the second half, the Vikings will take control of the game as they got three more unanswered scores from Cooper Allen, Jacob Mascarenas, and Jaydin Hughes, securing the 43-14 victory. In the winning effort, the Moriah Vikings would go to 4-4 on the season and will play the section 1 team in the quarterfinals of the state tournament in two weeks. It would be the last regular season game for the Plattsburgh Hornets as they would host the Ausable Valley Patriots in Section VII Volleyball action from the Plattsburgh High School. Before the game, they would honor the six seniors on the team. As for the match, the Hornets could win straight sets (25-16, 26-24, and 25-9). In the first two sets of the game, the Patriots would be holding their own and even have the lead a few times and had a chance to win the second set. With the win, the Plattsburgh Hornets would put the bow on their perfect season and go 16-0 as they head into the playoffs. As for the Ausable Valley Patriots, they will fall to 5-1 on the season as they have their season finale Wednesday Night against the Northeastern Clinton Cougars. Gallery

It would be week 7 of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season, and the Peru Nighthawks would host the Ausable Valley Patriots on the Nighthawk's senior night. The Nighthawks would take the early lead in the game at 7-0 on the 4-yard rush by Chase Carpenter 2 minutes into the game. Then, to finish the quarter, the Nighthawks would add two rushing touchdowns to give them the 21-0 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Nighthawks continued their success and added a pair of touchdowns from Chase Carpenter and Jake Frechette, who took the 34-0 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter, the Nighthawks would stay hot and expand their lead to 41-0 on the Owen Smith 1-yard run. Then, in the fourth quarter, the Patriots would break through and get on the board as they connected on a 74-yard pass to Lucas Dashnaw and got the two-point conversion to make it a 41-8 game, and that's where the scoring would end. With the win, the Nighthawks go to 4-2 in the season as they enter the season finale next week against the Moriah Vikings. As for the Ausable Valley Patriots, they fall to 0-7 on the season and will finish off their season next weekend against the Beekmantown Eagles. Gallery
