Cornell's Ian Shane (30//0 with the pad save on Massachusetts' Aydar Suniev (16) to secure the Big Red win. It would be the opening game of the first-ever Adirondack Winter Invitational from the famed Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY and it would feature a couple of powerhouses as the #11 Massachusetts Minutemen would face off with the #17 Cornell Big Red. The game would be very physical through the first period and the rest of the game as there would be no scoring in the first but both teams would have their chances to get the opening goal and the Minutemen had an early goal waved off on the coach's challenge. In the second period, the Big Red would get the opening goal just 2:52 on Hoyt Stanley's first NCAA goal. However, the Minutemen would come charging back and tie the game up at one just four minutes later at the 6:08 mark of the period from Michael Cameron. The Big Red would regain the lead with just over five minutes left in the period on the Dalton Bancroft powerplay goal. The game would stay there through most of the third period until the Minutemen would pull the goalie for the extra stake and tie the game up on the scramble play from Ryan Lautenbach. From there the game would head to the five-minute 3x3 overtime and there would be no scoring so the game would officially end in a tie. Because this was a tournament weekend the shootout would be needed to decide the games tomorrow and the Cornell Big Red would win 2-0. In the winning effort for the Big Red, Ian Shane would make 23 saves as the Cornell Big Red head to the finals tomorrow where they will get the winner of #13 Arizona State Sun Devils and the Clarkson Golden Knights.
