Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Championship: Boy's Hockey: #3 Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers @ #1 Beekmantown Eagles February 26th, 2024

Beekmantown's Edward Sweenor (10) flips it over the shoulder of the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid goalie Cassidy Goodman (31) four one of his four goals on the night. It would be the Section VII Division II Boy's Hockey Championship and it would feature the upset-minded #3 Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers taking on the #1 and top ten state-ranked Beekmantown Eagles from the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in front of nearly a 1000 fans. The Eagles would get on the board early with the Zach Lapier goal at the 3:04 mark of the first period. Lapier and the Beekmantown Eagles would strike again with 2 more goals 41 seconds apart at the 5:38 and 6:19 mark of the first period to give the Beekmantown Eagles the 3-0 lead on the Zach Lapier. With just over 4 minutes left in the opening period, the Eagles would strike again and take the 4-0 lead this time coming from Edward Sweenor. The game would stay that wall to the third period as there was no scoring in the second period and the teams would just go back and forth with each having their chance but were just unable to light the lamp. However, the Eagles would make up for the no scoring in the second period as they would score twice in the first 32 seconds of the third period as Edward Sweenor would score twice to complete his hat trick and give the Eagles the 6-0 lead. Not being outdone by his teammate Zach Lapier would strike again for his fourth on the night just 39 seconds later and the Eagles now led 7-0. Then with just over ten minutes left in the game, Edward Sweenor would strike to even back up with Zach Lapier who have four goals each to make it an 8-0 lead for the Eagles. Then 6:38 left in the game the other Lapier kid on the team Carter LaPier would score and take the 9-0 lead and win as the Beekmantown Eagles were crowned the 2024 Section VII Champions and will play the Queensbury Spartans in the Quarterfinals of the NYSPHSAA Division 2 Tournament on March 2nd in Queensbury, New York with the winner headed to Buffalo, New York, and the State Frozen Four. Saranac Lake/Lake Placid's Scottie Nicholas (1) with the pad save on Saranac's Adrian Barnes (8) as part of a 51-save effort to get the Lakers win. It would be the second semi-final of the night in the Section VII Boy's Hockey Tournament as the #3 Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers would travel to Plattsburgh and the Amer-Can North Sports Center and take on the #2 seeded Saranac Spartans with the winner getting the #1 Beekmantown Eagles for a sectional title. The favorite Saranac Spartans would get the opening goal of the game at the 9:24 mark of the first period on the Landon Duprey goal to make it 1-0. The Spartans wouldn't waste time making it 2-0 15 seconds later on the Ryan Campbell goal. Then with just 22 seconds left in the period, the Spartans would jump out to a 3-0 lead on the Evan Patrie goal. The Lakers would come out firing and make it a 3-1 game 41 seconds into the second period on the Evan Willette goal. The Lakers would stay hot and make it a one-goal game at the 5:20 mark of the period on the powerplay goal of Adrian McCormick. Then within a 2:27 stretch in the second period, the Lakers would explode for three goals to take a 5-3 lead with goals from Evan Willette, Will Landerault, and Adrian McCormick. The Spartans would answer back with 36 seconds left in the second period on the Ashtyn Caitlin goal to make it a one-goal game at 5-4 at the end of the second period. The game would stay there till the 10:45 mark of the third period when the Lakers's Kyle Duffy would score to make it a 6-4 Lakers lead from there the defense would clinch down and they would add an empty netter from Evan Willette for the hat trick and the 7-4 victory. In the winning effort, Scottie Nicholas would make 51 saves as they would advance to the Section VII Boy's Hockey Championship against the Beekmantown Eagles. Gallery

It would be the semi-finals from the Section VII Boy's Hockey and it would see the #1 Beekmantown Eagles hosting the #5 Plattsburgh Hornets at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena for the right to play for the sectional title on Monday evening. The favor Beekmantown Eagles would get off to a good start as they would score twice in the first period from Sam Bingel and they would have a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. In the second period, the Eagles would get another couple of goals this time from Ryan Demers and Sam Bingel and Bingel would get the hat trick as the Eagles extended their lead to 4-0. In the third period, the Eagles would put the exclamation point on the game as they would add another three goals from Zach Lapier, Braden Nephew, and Pryce Parker as the Eagles got the 7-0 win and advanced to Section VII Boy's Hockey Finals against the winner of the Saranac Spartans and Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers. In a losing effort, the Plattsburgh Hornets goalie Owen Chapple would do everything he could to keep his team in the game with 63 saves on the evening. Gallery.

Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Boy's Hockey: Northeastern Clinton Cougars @ #8 Beekmantown Eagles February 12th 2024

Northeastern Clinton's Garrett Pilon (10) with the crunching hit on the Beekmantown skater as they go after the loose puck along the boards. It would be the last regular season game for the #8 Beekmantown Eagles as they would host the Northeastern Clinton Cougars at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena on senior night. It would just take 2:27 into the game before we had our first goal from Novak Jarus for the Eagles to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Cougars would come right back and tie the game up at one on the Eddie Bulriss goal just two minutes later. About halfway through the period, the Eagles would retake the lead on the shorthanded goal by Zach Lapier to make it a 2-1 game. The Cougars would answer the bell right back just 20 seconds later on the Wayne Simpson goal to tie the game at two. The Eagles come out swinging in the second period and take the 3-2 lead just seven into the period on the Louis Sweenor goal. The Eagles would stay on fire as they would score again just 1:20 later as Novak Jarus would get his second goal of the game to make it a 4-2 game. The Cougars would come back again and make it a one-goal again on the Wayne Simpson second of the evening to make it a 4-3 game. The game would stay there till the 6:27 mark of the third period when Owen Ebersol would tie the game for the Cougars at four. The Eagles from there would take control of the game as they would get three unanswered goals from Louis Sweenor (two) and Zach Lapier as the Eagles secured the 7-4 win. In the winning effort, the Eagles would finish off the sectional season with a perfect 8-0 record and the regular season at 17-3 while the Northeastern Clinton Cougars fall to 4-14-1 on the season. Saranac's Evan Patrie (6) puts it glove side on the Saranac Lake-Lake Placid's Cassidy Goodman (31) to make it 4-0 at the time. It would be the second meeting of the year between the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers and the SaranacSpartans this time from the Amer-Can North Sports Center in Section VII Boy's Hockey. The Spartans would get the game started fast as Adrian Barnes would get the opening goal of the game just 1:51 into the game and the Spartans would be off and running as they would add three more goals in the period from Ashtyn Catlin, Evan Patrie, and Landen Duprey and take the 4-0 lead after the first period. In the second period the good times would start rolling for the Spartans would add a five spot in the period on goals from Landen Duprey three in the period and four in the game and Noah Miner and Jonathan Coryer would get the other two. While Ayden McCormick would get the Lakers on the board in the period the Spartans would be in control with the 9-1 lead after the second period. In the third period, the Spartans would empty the bench and get the other players in the game. The Spartans would still get 4 goals in period two coming from Tom Sorensen (his first two of his high school career) with the other two coming from Ryan Campbell and Landen Duprey his fifth of the game as the Spartans would get the 13-1. In the winning effort, Shawn McLane would make 15 saves on the night as the Spartans would go to 11-7-1 on the season. The Lakers goalies would combine for nearly 50 saves on the night as they fell to 5-12-1. The Lakers will be back in action Wednesday with their home finale against the Plattsburgh Hornets. While Saranac Spartans will finish their regular season with a nonleague against the Watertown Crusaders. Gallery

With a couple of weeks left in the regular season, we would have the Northeastern Clinton Cougars traveling to Plattsburgh and the Amer-Can North Sports Center to tangle with the #18 Saranac Spartans in Section VII Hockey. The game would start fast and fierce with both teams getting a goal in the first five minutes of the game. Then with 5:42 left in the opening period, the upset-minded Cougars would strike on the Wade Simpson goal to give the Cougars the 2-1 lead. The game would stay there till about the 7:35 mark of the second when Landon Duprey would knock in the rebound and tie the game at two. Then about 75 seconds later the Spartans would take the lead as Jackson Coryer would find the back of the net and the Spartans would take the 3-2 lead. Then just 40 seconds later the Spartans would expand their lead to two goals as it would become a 4-2 game on the Noah Miner powerplay goal. The quick attack would continue for the Spartans as they would score again about a minute later on the Ashytn Catlin goal as they took the 5-2 lead. Then to finish off the scoring in the second period Landon Duprey would finish off the hat trick with just about 2:30 left to give the Spartans the 6-2 lead. In the third period, the Spartans would give a lot of the kids that don't see a lot of playing time sometime in the period and there would be no scoring throughout and the Spartans hold on for the 6-2 win. In the winning effort, the Spartans go to 10-7-1 and be back on the ice Friday as they take on Watertown the season while the Cougars fall to 4-12-1.Gallery

It would be the second meeting of the year for the Saranac Spartans and Plattsburgh Hornets at both their home rinks the Ameri-can North Sports Center in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. It would take till the midway mark of the first period that the Saranac Spartans would take the lead on the Landon Giroux goal to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead. Then with just about 3:30 left in the opening period, the Spartans would double their lead on the Landon Duprey goal and that's how the first period would end. Then again about halfway through the second period the Spartans would strike and take a 3-0 on Landon Giroux's second goal of the game. However, the underdog Hornets would not go quite down three they would score at the 1112 mark of the period on a turnover in front of the net that Ben Beizo would slam away for the goal to make it a 3-1 game. Then just about 90 seconds later the Hornets would strike again this time from Braeden Calkins to make it a one-goal game at 3-2 and that's how the second period was. In the third period, the Spartans would waste little time regaining the two-goal lead at 4-2 on the second Landon Duprey goal of the night at the 4:37 mark. Then at the ten-minute mark of the third Landon Giroux would score to complete his hat trick and make it a 5-2 game. Then with just about two minutes left in the game, Ashytn Caitlin would score on the powerplay as the Spartans would secure the 6-2 victory. In the winning effort, Mason Patnode would make 24 saves as the Spartans go to 8-6-1 on the season as they head to Lake George region for a pair of games this weekend. As for the Hornets Owen Chapple would make 40 saves on the night as they fall to 1-14 on the season and their next tilt Wednesday night against the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid Lakers at Amer-can North Sports Center. It would be a trip up to Lake Placid and the home of the 1980 and 1932 Winter Olympic games as the Saranac Spartans would face off with the upstart Saranac Lake Lake Placid Lakers at the Jack Shea 1932 Rink. They would be back and forth through the first ten of games and the teams would have their chances. The Spartans would finally break through with the opening goal of the game at the 10:09 period when Gabe Moore would get the Spartans on the board. The game would stay there till the second period when the Spartans would extend their lead to 2-0 on the Landen Duprey goal at the 1:23 mark. The Spartans would look to take control of the game of the game as Landen Duprey would strike again and the Spartans would take a 3-0 lead 5 minutes into the second period. The Lakers would keep fighting throughout the period and break through and break up the shutout at the 10;41 mark of the period when Kellen Duffy would score and make it a 3-1 game. The game would stay there the rest of the period and till the 9:36 mark of the third period, Adrian Barmes would score and make it a 4-1 game. Then with 2:30 left in the game, the Spartans would put the icing on the cake as Brody MaCombwe would score and the Saranac Spartans secured the 5-1 win. In the winning effort, Shawn McLane would make 23 saves as they go to 7-6-1 on the season while the Lakers fall to 3-7-1 on the season. The Saranac Spartans will be back in action at home on January 26th against the Plattsburgh Hornets while the Lakers will be playing the Northeastern Clinton Cougars. Gallery.

NYSPHSAA Boy's Hockey: Greece Storm @ Saranac Spartans January 19th 2024

We would have a little out-of-conference action tonight at Amer-can North Sports Center as the Saranac Spartans would host the Greece Storm from section five from over by Rochester. The Storm would jump out to the 1-0 lead just a minute into the game on the Noah Guntrum goal. However, the Spartans would come right back and tie the game up at the 2:42 mark of the period on the Landen Duprey goal. The game would stay there till the last 1:30 of the period when Noah Miner would score to give the Spartans the 2-1 lead. The Spartans would come out in the second period firing and expand the lead to 3-1 on the Ashtyn Catlin goal at the 4:45 mark of the period. The Storm wouldn't go away and they would make a 3-2 game on the powerplay goal from Jack Pilgram with 2:15 left in the period. The storm would come out in a surge in the third period and tie the game at three on the Mitchell Barnes powerplay goal just 2:48 into the period. The Storm weren't done though as they would keep coming and take the 4-3 lead halfway through the period on the Alan Wilkins goal to make it 4-3 and from there defense would hold the line as the Storm would get the 4-3. In the winning effort, the Greece Storm goes to 5-6-1 and will travel to take on the Northeastern Clinton Cougars. As for the Spartans, they will also be 5-6-1 on the season and will have a matchup tomorrow with the Fayetteville-Manlius. Gallery

Saranac's Landon Duprey with the early first-period to goal to answer back and tie the game at one. It would be the rematch from last year's Section VII Boy's Hockey Championship and it would feature the #10 Beekmantown Eagles and the Saranac Spartans the Spartans would be looking to avenge their earlier lost to the Eagles. The game would start well for the home Eagles as they would jump to the early 1-0 lead on the Edward Sweenor goal just 1:21 into the game. However, the Spartans would come back just over three minutes later and tie the game at one on the Landon Duprey goal. Then with 2:30 left in the first period, the Spartans would take the 2-1 lead on the Ashton Caitlin goal. The game would stay there till the 4:53 mark of the second period when the Eagles would come and tie the game at two on the Sam Bingel goal. However, the Spartans would not let the game stay tied long as they would retake the lead at 3-2 on Ashton Caitllin's second goal of the night just 45 seconds later. Then Landon Duprey would score twice for the Spartans with one on the powerplay to take the 5-2 lead. However, the Eagles would not let the period end that way as they would get with 1:32 left in the period as Pryce Parker would score to make it a 5-3 game as they headed to the second intermission. In the third period though the Eagles would come out flying as they would score three times in the first ten minutes of the period all from Zach Lapier to secure the 6-5 Eagles win and go to 9-2 on the season as they head to Saranac Lake Thursday to take on the Lakers while the Spartans fall to 5-5-1 on the season as they will welcome a couple of teams from the Syracuse area to AC North over the weekend.
