Castleton State's Arianna Coombs splits the defender and charges to the hoop. It would be the last game of the Cardinal Classic and between the host Plattsburgh State Cardinals and the Castleton State Spartans in what would be the third-place game as they were both coming off losses. The game would start well for the home Cardinals as they would start with a 17-10 lead after the 1st quarter. However, in the second quarter, the Spartans would come charging back with a 20-12 quarter and the Spartans would have a slim 30-29 lead at the intermission. When the teas returned from the intermission break the Spartanns would use the quarter to take control of the game with a 20-9 quarter and 50-38 lead overall. In that fourth quarter, the Cardinals would do everything they could to get back in the game but all they could do was cut the deficit in half with a 21-15 quarter giving the Spartans the 65-59 victory. In the losing effort, Payton Couture would lead the Cardinals with a game-high 20 points as they go to 2-2 on the season. The Cardinals will be back in action on Monday, November 28th as they will travel to Utica and take on the Pioners. Gallery

Cardinal Classic Day 2: Bates College Bobcats Vs Potsdam State Bears November 18th 2023

Bates College Morgan Kennedy (4) with the runner in the lane between the defenders for a game-high 22 points. It would be day 2 of the Cardinal Classic Women's Basketball Tournament and it would be a matchup for the title between Bates College from the NESCAC and the Potsdam State Bears of the SUNYAC after they both won yesterday. The Bobcats would be off and running in the first quarter and their defense would keep the Bears in check as the Bobcats would have the 14-3 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the teams would be more evenly matched as the Bobcats would only win the quarter 14-12 but the Bears would be behind 28-15 at the half. When the teams returned for the second half the teams would stay evenly matched but the Bears would be unable to do anything with the deficit as the Bobcats would win the quarter 15-14 and have a 43-31 lead as they enter the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats would finish off the Bears with a 15-6 quarter and the Bobcats would get 58-35 the win. In the winning effort, Morgan Kennedy would lead the way with 22 points as they go to 3-0 on the season and the Potsdam State Bears fall to 2-1 on the season. Gallery

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals celebrate as they take the 3-2 lead with 90 seconds left in the game to stay undefeated on the season. It would be the battle of the North Country as the #1 Plattsburgh State Cardinals (ranked number for the first time in 8 years) would host the Potsdam State Bears with just over 1500 fans in attendance in SUNYAC action. It would take till the midway mark of the first period when we would get the first goal of the game coming on the Bear's first shot on the Jack Loran goal to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. The game would stay there till there was just over a minute left in the period when the Cardinals would tie the game up on Bennett Stockdale's goal as they crashed the net. The Cardinals would have little time to take the lead in the game on Adam Tretowicz as he stuffs in the rebound 4:35 into the third to give the Cardinals the 2-1 lead. However, the Bears were not just going to roll over for the #1 team in the land as they would tie the game up at two on the Jack Loran second of the game. However, with just under 90 seconds left in the game, the Cardinals would take the 3-2 lead on the Paul Bryer goal for the 3-2 and eventual win. Jacob Hearne would make 17 saves in the winning effort as the Cardinals stayed undefeated on the season while the Bears fell to 1-5 in the early season. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals will be back in action as they host the Layer 8 North Country Shootout along with the Norwich, Middlebury, and St. Olaf. Gallery

Cardinal Classic Day 1: Castleton State Spartans Vs Potsdam State Bears November 17th 2023

Potsdam State' Jenna Cotter (25) with the block shot on the chippy down low for the block. It would be the opening game of the first day of the Cardinal Classic and it would feature the Castleton State Spartans from the Little East Conference and the Potsdam State Bears from the SUNYAC. The offenses would be on display through the first quarter as the Potsdam State Bears would have a slim 21-18 lead after the first quarter. The game would stay close through the second quarter as the Spartans would win the quarter by a slim 15-13 and take the 36-31 lead into the intermission. When the teams returned for the third quarter it would stay close but the Spartans would get the quarter but close by a 19-16 score and the Bears would have the two-point lead at 52-50 as they entered the 4th quarter. In the fourth quarter, the game would stay close but the Bears would extend the lead to six for the 79-73 win. In the winning effort for the Bears, Jakia Howard would lead the way with 28 points as the Bears will play Bates tomorrow for the Cardinal Classic title. Gallery

Plattsburgh State's Elli Shiller (33) with the blocker save with traffic in front as part of a 19-save performance for the win. The #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would be back in action at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena in SUNYAC action to take on the Brockport State Golden Eagles to finish off their weekend homestand in front of 1325 fans. The game would not start the greatest as the Golden Eagles would get the opening goal of the game at the 5:40 mark of the first period from Scott Ramaekers to make it 1-0. The game would stay there to the 5:09 mark of the second period when the Cardinals would tie the game up at 1-1 on the Jake Lanyi goal. The game would remain even till the midway mark of the third period when Spencer Bellina would score to give the Cardinals the 2-1 lead. Then with 2:30 left in the game, the Cardinals would ice the game away on Josh Belgrave's empty netter to give the Cardinals the 3-1 victory. In the winning effort, the Cardinals stayed perfect on the season at 5-0 and Elli Shiller made 19 saves in the winning effort. The Cardinals will be back home next weekend as they take on fellow north country and SUNYAC foe the Potsdam Bears.Gallery

Plattsburgh State's Ryan Butler (16) comes in goalie and takes the quick wrister on neet. It would be a battle of the top ten teams in the nation as the #3 Plattsburgh State Cardinals would host the #8 Geneseo State Knights in SUNYAC play in front of 1400 fans. The Cardinals would get off to a quick start just 58 seconds into the game on the Tio D'Addario goal for the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals would expand their lead to a 2-0 lead on the shorthanded goal by Joshua Belgrave. The Cardinals would finish off their three-goal period with 15 seconds left on the Kevin Weaver Vitale goal. The game would stay there until the 12-minute mark of the second period when the Cardinals Bennett Stockdale would light the lamp and take the 4-0 lead. Although two minutes later the Knights would strike twice within a minute to cut the lead in half at 4-2 on the Mitch Machlitt and Teddy Purcell goals. Then with 2:15 left in the period the Cardinals would regain their two goal when Bennett Stockdale would get his second goal of the game. The game would stay there till about there was 3:30 left in the game when the Cardinals would get the empty netter on Joshua Belgrave's second goal of the game to secure the 6-2 win. In the winning effort, Jacob Hearne would make 30 saves as the Cardinals went to 4-0 and the Knights fell to 4-1. The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow night as they take on the Brockport State Golden Eagles on Veterans Day. Gallery

#18 Gouverneur Wildcats Vs #14 Saranac Spartans November 10th 2023

Gouverneur's Raine Rumble (4) with the catch and score from 11 yards to give the Wildcats the lead. It would be the opening Round of the NYSPHSAA Class C Football Tournament and it would feature the #14 Saranac Spartans hosting the #18 Gouverneur Wildcats from Plattsburgh High School in the North Country Super Bowl for the right to head to the quarterfinals and meet up with a team from Section II. It would be a defensive first half and the teams would be looking for the first score of the game. The Spartans would break through with the first score of the game with 28 seconds left in the half on the Zander Daniels 7-yard pass strike to give the Spartans the 7-0 lead as they ended the first half. The game would stay there till the opening minute of the fourth quarter when Nathan Hamel would hit a 32-yard field goal to take the 10-0 lead. The Wildcats would get on the board finally at the 5:37 mark of the quarter on the Raine Rumble 3-yard pass and make it a 10-7 game. The Wildcats would keep fighting and capture the lead with 20 seconds left in the game on Raine Rumble's 11-yard pass and score. Although the Spartans wouldn't go quietly as they would have a chance to force overtime on a 40-yard field goal attempt it came up short. With the win the Gouverneur Wildcats advance to the quartersfinals next week and go to 8-1 on the season while the Spartans season will come to an end at 8-2. Gallery

#1 Peru Nighthawks Vs #2 Beekmantown Eagles November 4th 2023

The Peru Nighthawks are crowned the 2023 Section VII Class B champions. It would be the second game of the championship Saturday from Ausable Valley as this time it would be the Section VII Class B championship as it would be the classic rivalry with the #1 Peru Nighthawks and the #2 Beekmantown Eagles for the right to head to the NYSPHSAA Class B Tournament. It would start out like a lot of these classic games with hard-hitting and tight defense. The Nighthawks would finally break through for the first score of the game on a 23-yard pass and catch to Trenten Taylor to give the Nighthawks the 7-0 lead with 2 minutes left in the half and that is how the first half would end. The game would stay there till the 5:38 mark of the third quarter when Zack Engstrom would score from 5 yards out to make it a 14-0 game. Then with just over six minutes left in the game, the Nighthawks would take control of the game on Zack Engstrom's second score of the game this time from 40 yards out, and secure the 20-0 lead and win. With the win the Nighthawks go to 8-1 on the season and will take on the Gouvenor Wildcats in the opening round of the NYSPHSAA Class C Tournament. The Beekmantown Eagles season will come to an end at 6-4. Gallery

#1 Satanac Spartans Vs #2 Saranac Lake Red Storm November 4th 2023

The Saranac Spartans are crowned the 2023 Section VII Class C Champions. It would be the first championship of championship Saturday from Ausable Valley High School as the #17 (#1) Saranac Spartans would take on the #2 Saranac Lake Red Storm for the Section VII Class C Championships. The Spartans would jump out to the lead just 2:13 into the game on a 25-yard run by Landen Smith to give the Spartans the 7-0 lead. The Spartans would stay on the gas and extend their lead to 15-0 on a 2-yard run by Nathan Hamel. Then with just 1:12 left in the quarter, Nathan Hamel would score again this time from 18 yards out, and give the Spartans the 22-0 lead as the first quarter would come to an end. In the second quarter, the Spartans would stay on the gas as they would score two more times this time from Conner Burns and Alex Clancey, and give the Spartans the 36-0 lead as they headed into the locker room. When the teams returned for the second half it was looking like the first half again as the Spartans would score just 4:35 into the half on a 6-yard run by Haiden Blair to give the Spartans the 43-0 lead. The Red Storm would get on the board with a 12-yard passing touchdown with 1:20 left in the third quarter to make it a 43-6 game. However, the Red Storm would not just be happy with avoiding the shutout as they would score again with 4 minutes left in the game on the Evan Willett running score to make it 43-12 game. With that, the Saranac Spartans would hold onto the win and advance to the NYSPHSAA Class C Tournament and will be in action next week against Section X's Gouvenour Wildcats in the opening round on November 10th. As for the Saranac Lake Red Storm, their season comes to an end at 1-8. Gallery

#1 Moriah Vikings Vs #2 Ausable Valley Patroits November 3rd 2023

The Moriah Vikings keep there reign atop of Class D as they are crowned the 2023 Section VII Class D Championship. It would be the Section VII Class D Championship from the Beekmantown High School as the #8 (#1) Moriah Vikings would take on the #2 Ausable Valley Patriots for the right to go to the NYSPHAA Class D Tournament. The game would start off well for the Vikings as they would score just 3:50 into the game on a five-yard run by Evan Fleury to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead. The Vikings would stay on the gas and score just under four minutes later this time on a 2 yard run by Evan Fluery to extend their lead to 14-0. Then in the final 30 seconds in the first quarter, the Vikings would strike again this time from 34 yards and Evan Fluery would score again for his three score of the quarter to give the Vikings the 22-0 lead. The Vikings would slow down some and get just one score in the quarter on a 68-yard scramble to give the Vikings the 30-0 lead as the team went into the intermission. When the teams returned for the second half the Vikings would lighten up and there would only be one score on a 25-yard pass to Luke Smith to give the Vikings the 37-0 lead and the win. In the winning effort, the Vikings go to 7-2 on the season and will enter the NYSPHSAA Class D Tournament and take on the winner of Section II on November 17th. As the Ausable Valley Patriots season comes to an end at 1-8. Gallery
